I use Lactaid fast acting pills alot ..they really help with gas bc I'm apparently Ive become lactose intolerant since my Ds and lot of things I eat that have hidden dairy.

But I've noticed when I take a little extra, 3 instead of 2, or if Ive had something sweet, I get bad diarrhea!! Does anyone have this issue?

Most of us become lactose intolerant after the DS but for many, it’s not forever. And it isn’t all lactose for many of us. Milk is the biggest issue. I use heavy whipping cream instead of milk in cooking. HWC has very little lactose. Milk is still a problem for me.

How far out are you?

oh, I was just about to say, what if you avoid regular milk but try real cream. Southern Lady beat me to it!

1–As a militant former nursing mom, I submit that cow’s milk is a PERFECT food...for cow’s babies, so we CAN go without.
2–That said, there are not a lot of choices on lactose free ice cream, so we make exceptions. And try to avoid low fat ice cream, except that’s what my faborite lactose free ice cream is.

So, why three? Are you consuming THAT MUCH lactose at one sitting? Or have you started trying to treat all your gas issues w/Lactaid?

I gave up milk, and I used to drink at least 1/2 gallon a day. Just not worth the shits and gas. Been at least 2 years and don't miss it anymore. Cheese doesn't bother me, and I don't drink coffee so no creamer. Where else are you encountering all this dairy?

I completely understand the "hidden" dairy challenge! I find a lot of prepackaged and restaurant foods contain skim milk powder, which wreaks havoc on my system. It's in foods in which you never would expect a dairy component. Like the others, cheese agrees with me, especially hard cheeses, so that's an area of safety. I still avoid yogurt, ice cream, milk and read every label to ensure I'm not subject to an unpleasant surprise. I've never used more than 2 lactaid pills at once, so don't know if more would be troublesome, but I only use lactaid now when I dine out or at a friend's house.

Thanks all for the replie and advice. It's actually not so much a problem with milk, because I consume very little of that directly. But i eat alot of ...A LOT...of heavy creams and butter, oh and cheese. So the lactaid tablets help stave off the gas. But i do realize if i take more than 2 in a day, diarrhea will ensue.

Im only a year and half out so im still in the learning curve

Too much fat (i.e. heavy whipping cream and butter) will also cause diarrhea. Check your fat intake. Some people are very sensitive to too much fat. For me, sugar or sugar w/ fat = diarrhea.

southernlady and Settledownnow u may be on to something...I've noticed it's worse after a high fat dessert treat or if i had a high fat protein meal with a glass of wine...especially after wine. Im a waterfall the next day!!!! And Imodium does nothing

So it may not be lactose as you are thinking but fat and sugar. In that case, Lactaid would not help. I know if I eat cheap ice cream = diarrhea. I'm also thinking that the wine is your culprit as well.

You may want to try Gas-X in lieu of or in conjunction with lactaid. I have found it to be helpful for the occasional overindulgence. Worth a shot!
