Hi all,

Is this where I introduce myself? I am LOST in here... Well, I'll start here.

I just joined. I am scheduled for a DS on May 12, with Dr McKinnlay in Salt Lake City. I am not only nervous but scared, apprehensive and anxious. I just read a forum on her about gas. I had heard there would/could be some paint peeling gas but wasn't thinking I'd have to plan my travel around my stinky butt! I'm so worried about failing at losing weight, just like every other time I've tried. Any encouraging words, words of wisdom or support? I'm not picky. I'll take what I can get!

Welcome, @gogetblonde, you did good finding the starting place. :)

As far as gas....even NORMAL humans can have bad paint peeling gas. As the saying goes, shit stinks! Best way to control is is to not eat the foods that cause gas. Which foods...well, that depends on the individual. At first, most things will upset your innards but as your system gets adjusted to it's new configuration, it's more a trial and error to find your personal "OH hell NO" list.

Example, cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cabbage, etc can be very gassy to any human. PERSONALLY they do not bother me but they can cause gas in a normie (no WLS person) so why shouldn't it also cause problems in a segment of the WLS population.

Lactose is one many of us have issues with. And some can't touch bread, some can. It's all in what you eat...

I am closing in on 60...been overweight or obese since I was 12. I have failed at EVERY method I've tried UNTIL NOW! This one worked...all I have to do is follow a few rules, eat protein first, Eat enough protein and fat, Take vitamins based on my labs, and get lab work twice a year if possible, minimum. AND be an advocate for my own care!

Hi @gogetblonde ! I think you might be referring to the thread I started about flying and gassiness. Let me just clarify a few things... I have always had trouble with getting gassy when flying, and I had always been a "tooty" person. I would always take lots of charcoal pills and gas x before flying to try to minimize the discomfort. I had IBS for as long as I can remember and have been lactose intolerant for probably as long so I've had to consider these things my entire adult life. Now, at 9 months post op, I only go #2 in the morning and at night, and I only get a little gassy in the evening. I actually have less gas than I had as a pre op. If I eat bad carbs, I get horrid gas pains and the paint peeling toots (or death farts, as my husband calls them, lol) but devrom helps a lot and LOTS of WLS peeps take it everyday for that reason.

When I first started considering the DS, it was my main concern. I have a touch of a phobia about doing #2s in public restrooms. I really REALLY hate it. Someone on another site told me to get off my high horse and think about the potential benefits of resolving my sleep apnea and diabetes and living a normal, healthy life and to stop being a baby about pooping in public. She was right and I'm glad she said it in a harsher way than that because it sunk in :)

I just realized I never did this! I kind of go in and out of the forum randomly.

Well to start off, I'm Amber. I had my DS Oct 23, 2013 with Dr. John Rabkin in San Francisco. Highest weight 425, Surgery Weight 391, Currently I'm 298. The first time under 300 since 2005! Very exciting. I got rid of my HBP pills the day of surgery, still have PCOS unfortunately. At the time of surgery, Rabkin also did a hernia repair by my belly button, which caused a few problems after surgery, but they weren't that bad. I've been pretty stable with minimum problems. Some days are better than others, which is par for the course.

I'm glad everyone is so helpful and knowledgeable here. It's great to have a support system to turn to.

Indeed I was talking about your "gassy" post! :) I am a "tooty" person as well. I am thinking it was mainly diet based. ie: soda breads and other things that don't agree with my innards! I don't like "pooping" in public either! But maybe not to the extent of your fears. I WILL NOT EVER use a portapotty. Like, ever. EVER. The thought of being Gassy afterwards is alarming but not enough to make me change my mind. Thank you for your input. Both of you!

So, I need a DS friend. I'm so glad I found this site. I'm hopeful the things I read and stories of your successes will help me along my journey. I feel like I'm going into this not knowing what it will be like on the other side. I'm scared something will happen to me and my 13 year old son will have no mom. His father and I are divorced. I fear him having to grow up in his house. (Home would be the incorrect noun) My son loves his Dad but would never ever want to live with him. I am married now and my husband is great but he's "rough around the edges". I need to be here. SO, that's why I'm doing this and also why I'm scared. Trying to handle both those feeling has been somewhat challenging. I still have not gotten to a place where I'm good. Does that even sound logical? Someone tell me they felt the same way. I guess what I need is to see into my future and know, it's all going to be ok. Not just ok, but GREAT!

Hello everyone,
My name is Tameka bka NolaDiva1. Im a newbie to this site but not a newbie to weight loss surgery. I'm from New Orleans, La but relocated to Texas due to Katrina. I'm married to a wonderful hubby and we have 2 kiddos and a pug so anywho. In 2010 i had the lapband lost about 80lbs. I was happy about my weight loss and all my hard work to achieve it. Feb 2011 my lapband was removed what was suppose to be a surgery for a band slip ended up being major surgery for me. The band ate into a part of my stomach. A couple of years later i decided to find out if i could have wls again. I found Dr. Ayoola with weight loss specialist of north tx i decided to have the ds so im pre opp i have one more appt to go then my surgery will be scheduled. Im so excited and i cannot wait to start my new journey again.
