My name is Amy, I am 41 years old with a BMI to match, and am struggling with Diabetes T2, as well as some other health issues which are impacting my career as an attorney. So, I've decided to pursue bariatric surgery, and am scheduled for my procedure on the 24th of June. I'm ready to do the work and am excited to begin the journey toward getting my life and health back on track.

I've been reviewing so many studies relating to the various bariatric procedures as I was choosing mine, and it is nice to be able to learn from and speak to some real people to get personal perspectives, too! Thanks to everyone on here for your time and for sharing your stories.

@Pacifica Do your research. I would not recommend the gastric bypass. I had RNY in 2003. Lost weight but gained it all back. Going to have a revision to DS in July. You only want to cut once. This is a good place to learn. The "vets" are great and people are giving. Good luck!

Thanks for the advice! I am not having the gastric bypass though. I've done quite a bit of research, and VSG, Lap and GBP are not even on the radar. My surgeon and I are talking about either SIPS or DS.

Thanks. This site seems very pro-DS overall, which is not a bad thing! I appreciate your thoughts on this. :)

I had a SIPS procedure on Feb 19. I've already lost over 60% of my excess weight. I was out of the hospital in 36 hours, and back to working out in 10 days. I have had perfect vitamin levels without crazy vitamin regiments. Every body has to make their own choice, but I liked the idea of less complications, an overall more normal anatomy with less malabsorption related complications down the road. 41 is a pretty reasonable starting BMI. Mine was 36, and its 28 now. The one caution I would give you with a newer procedure is that you can get some medical advice that has been developed for sleeve or bypass patients, since that is the vast majority of operations.

Welcome! Sounds like you're on the right track to making a decision. I'd be choosing between those 2 if I were to have surgery knowing what I know now (I originally went in for a consult asking about the lap band {gasp!} and then was told RNY was best for me by a surgeon that didn't perform the DS). I'm very happy that accidentally found a doctor that told me the DS would actually be the best thing for me and my SMO status and then sent me to do research. Keep us posted :)

Hi and welcome to the site. You are obviously a smart young lady and after doing all your due diligence and research, will be able to come to your best decision based on your needs and your goals and what’s best for you. My best wishes for your success and health.

Welcome... I am biased but the DS is the only procedure I would have. That being said the SADI/SIPS seems to be gaining some popularity, but please read about potential complications because with a loop you are at significant risk of bile reflux. I also don't buy the surgeons selling this procedure as less risky than the DS.

Again, no procedure is without risk including my DS so good luck with your research and decision.... and welcome!

I really appreciate the warm welcome and things to consider. Look forward to talking more with you in the coming months. Thanks for taking the time to post. :)

Hey there. Thanks for your earlier response on my other thread. I see from reading more and more posts that some of the folks on the site come on pretty strong, but I think they mean well. And, if they've had such a great impact on others as you've said, then it all comes out in the wash. :)

That pretty much sums up our group. As you know, you don't get to dictate someone's response. However for really great, honest advice, this is the spot.
