The Shock Wave Kid ey Stone Smasher event is tomorrow.

I don't want to be knocked out cold for tomorrow's procedure. I've had this ESWL three times before and DISTINCTLY recall counting the THUD-THUD-THUD on my back. I don't recall any pain and that's what I want this time, so that it does not take my bowels three days to recover from this relatively minor procedure. THAT is the part I hate.

Otoh, I don't want the uro to pull rank on me and refuse to continue.

What do I say, to the anesthesiologist, tomorrow?

Any suggestions?

I've had lithotripsy several times and usually no pain, but the one time there was, it was horrific. Apparently things weren't quite lined up or something, and each pulse was like a serious kick in the kidneys. It was awful, and it was like that for every pulse. I prefer to be knocked out now because of that, even though I don't like waking out of anesthesia because I am always a bit frightened and a total ********.

The first lithotripsy I had was done when they put me into a tub of water, but had given me something so I couldn't move. I felt like a baby elephant being lifted with a crane out of that tub. I definitely prefer laying on the waterpad table they use now.

They did tell me that what happened the time it hurt was not common, but it traumatized me a bit. Do you have trouble with anesthesia? I'd ask for something to sedate, but not knock out if that were the case.

Thanks, bearmom. Good info. I've never had pool or water table!

Sorry, no advice from me because I am one that would prefer to be knocked out to have my nails done. I love the sleep! Okay, I do hate surgery of any kind and I hate, hate, hate to be intubated but, sedation is nice.

Hope you feel great very soon!

Well...no anesthsia problem, because no anesthesia, because no surgery today. INR was too high. Makes me more of a risk for hematoma in the area being pounded. I will have a different procedure in about a week and a half.

What is INR? I hope there is not a problem with waiting.

Btw...at some point I should probably clarify that both the stones and the PT/INR issues are related to my DS...

Anyway, I sent this to a friend of my daughter.

My PT/INR is too high. That means my blood is taking a bit too long to clot. The shock waves that they use to smash the stones can cause some internal bleeding. Doctor was concerned that I would end up with a big old hematoma in/on the kidney.

Instead of the ESWL, the shock wave thing, we will do the ureteroscopy...essentially Builder Bob toys...they can go all the way into the kidney, they laser smash stones....

...and they drag out the remnants in teeny tiny baskets.

Ouch! Feel better and hope you are very well sedated if not fully under. I have a friend who was constantly plagued by stones (and UTI's) and was zapped a number of times before they realized that her valve was allowing backflow or some such thing. (No idea of the medically-correct terminology!). They fixed the valve and and has been well since. With all of your urinary issues, I'm wonder if there might be a similar physical issue.

Uro mentioned that this morning...but in reference to another patient...words like "idiopathic," "congenital," and "reflux" sound familiar. But she did not suggest that my stones were mysterious.

Stones can provide a great environment for UTIs, what with their nooks and crannies and all.

But mine are calcium oxalate stones directly related to my lousy calcium levels and lousy citrate levels, (not to be confused with calcium citrate. I'm not sure why I stopped taking the UrocitK...perhaps because I'm an idiot? But my former uro said that ALL of his patients who were more than a few years out from RnY (and with me, the DS) had huge citrate deficiencies...and stones.

My other bladder issues arrived decades prior to bariatric surgery...but the stones are being blamed on WLS.

(I like this doctor...she says she's "just a plumber." And she says it with a Chinese accent, which makes it kind of cute.)

I hope this gets better soon. you may need to clarify how worried I should be about you.

You might want to think about getting concerned about my narcotic consumption. Other than that, stuff is painful but not life-threatening!

I looked up UrocitK hoping to find a miracle drug and found I'm already taking something like it. I take CytraK, an absolutely horrid tasting liquid mixed with water. I use things like Mio liquid enhancer to make it more palatable. :ahhhhhhh:

I hope you fare well with your stone removal. I'm also sorry you're having problems with sedation/anesthesia. My doc insists on General Anesthesia and I've no problem with that. I am totally unaware of any noise or sensations and my recovery is great. May you have as close to that as possible.

OK - I'll be concerned about this. keep in mind narcotics tend to get less effective the more you use them. sadly. but if the brilliant Dr. House knew that and got addicted anyway, well it could happen.

btw, my gambling seems to be under control. so that's good.

Get back on UrocitK! I wish I liked narcotics, because I sure as heck like pain relief, but the whole wooziness thing puts a damper on the soothing goodness. Is the PT/INR issue being addressed? That makes me worry.
