Actually there isn't a big difference...except maybe the fact that flatfoot clogging is usually done solo and most of the cloggers in this area usually do their clogging as part of square dancing.

More history of clogging here: http://www.doubletoe.com/history.htm

Growing up, I did attend square dances near Cedar Mtn, NC (Transylvania County) where clogging was very common and even tried it but was never coordinated enough to pull it off!

Fabulous info! Why do I never think to look this stuff up in Wiki? It was hinted to me that the flatfooting style doesn't lift the feet as high - few kicks - and it seems to me that it is VERY similar to plain old tap dancing. I don't have the foot control to do it either, which is why I'm slogging through yet another round of (geriatric) beginning tap classes. A dismal failure so far, but interesting. I also square danced as a kid, but New England style is much less energetic! In recent years my daughter has gotten me interested in contra dancing, which is EVERYwhere up here, and depends heavily on square dance experience. She and I are the only ones in the dead of winter who dance barefoot on icy floors. When exhaustion sets in I play spoons with the band. LIFE IS GREAT WITH 100 POUNDS GONE!!!

Never experienced the big set until last month. Didn't know it was a whole different style.
Yeap, it's just an outgrowth of the small 4 person sets that were extremely popular in this region back in it's early days.

The barn we used was known as Robin Hood's barn in Sherwood Forest in Cedar Mtn area.
