The Different types of Protein Powder.

I started out with Syntrax Nectars & loved the Strawberry Kiwi. I later switched to the Nectar Naturals (no artificial sweeteners) and once I got used to it, I found I liked both the peach and the orange. I think the third Natural is a punch but I hated that.

Soooooo, I need some protein powder advice if anyone can spare it. @Parousia - I'd especially value your input on what you use!

I have only found one source that ships one of the three most recommended protein whey isolates I've read about on this board to Australia. And they charge $75 shipping for two tubs of it. Most companies won't ship it as customs confiscates items that are more than 10% dairy, which whey isolate would clearly be. I imagine Vitamin Shoppe must have some kind of permit that allows them to do it, but no one else seems to. Vitalady says she'll ship to Australia, but no guarantees on shipping price, AND she says she'll check into what's allowed to be shipped before shipping it (naturally) - so she'll of course find she can't ship whey isolate powder to Australia, either.

So obviously I need to find a type that IS available directly in Australia. What are the most important qualities to look for in a protein powder? Whey isolate, zero carb (though so far we've only found some with 0.3 g carbs per serving), what else do I need to be keeping an eye out for? Any advice VERY appreciated!
Sorry to take so long to respond. Just saw your message now. I get WPI from a local manufacturing company called Bulk Nutrients: https://www.bulknutrients.com.au. I'm very happy with it :). I buy the unflavoured WPI ($32 for 1 kg) and buy flavouring separately from the same company ($12 for enough to flavour 4 kg of protein powder). They charge $12 flat rate shipping in Oz. You can also get a free sample to try it out.

I just ordered some samples of different stuff from vitalady. I'm getting tired of the same ole chocolate.
I mix it up between the Premiere RTD and the cans of Pure Protein Frosty Chocolate. The pure protein tastes the best to me...but it's not a whey isolate.
It's a protein blend - milk protein concentrate and calcium caseinate...but man it tastes good!

I don't tolerate artificial sweeteners at all even stevia tastes terribly bitter. I do tolerate a little bit of Splenda. There is something in the ingredients of whey and whey isolate powders that do not agree with my body at all. I also went through months of very unnecessary horrible diarrhea because of it. So now it is only unsweetened unflavored egg white protein. I use Now brand but I am considering trying the Paleo brand. My problem is mainly the foam it makes even just using a shaker cup. It is almost like meringue. No matter how long it sets it does not turn to liquid. I have to eat it with a spoon. The shake also gives me a very uncomfortable full feeling that lasts about a hour or more. Does anyone else doing egg white protein shakes have this problem and where you able to solve it any way?

I can tell you from very costly and a hell I wouldn't wish on anyone that I can not do regular shakes and I am not lactose intolerant. I can drink regular Vitamin D milk , ice cream, cheese, sour cream all of it with no problem.

Wow Barb, that is interesting. I'll probably get booed down here, but have you considered just gulping down the egg whites raw? Same consistency of an oyster! Maybe you could cook the egg whites into meringues. They are yummie. Just a few thoughts. :)

@Razbry I wouldn't boo you down but my GI doctor might. He is already concerned somewhat because the egg white powders are made from raw eggs. I am hoping they do something through the processing that you shouldn't have to worry about that.I have thought of the meringue idea and I will try it later today. I'll see if it gives me that full uncomfortable feeling that the powder foam does. I wish I could get them down raw. I have never tried it.

I might just try the regular whey isolate again because you can get 42 grams of protein with one shake. It has been almost a year since I tried. I still have some of the Now brand unflavored unsweetened of it also. It has been just setting on the shelf. I paid to much to just throw it away.

@Spiky Bugger Does your egg white powder foam up too? If so do you eat it? My shake doesn't taste bad so that isn't the problem.

@Barb1 I found I can tolerate any shake now if I drink it really slowly, as in 1/3 to 1/2 the shake and put it back in the fridge for later, repeat after an hour or two. The really dense ones that have 40+grams of protein, I'll take a few sips here and there throughout the day. I guess maybe too much refined liquid protein hitting my guts all at once makes them spaz out? I dunno, but this works and I can tolerate pretty much anything I try now.

Thank @brooklyngirl i will give this a try. i would just love to do what En does. She just mixes hers with 4 oz of water and jugs it back. i really do need to step up my protein intake. Thanks
I wish I could do that as well, it would make it easier, but I can't, so I make due. This way is easier than worrying about fitting in another 30 gram meal!

This is great information. Before surgery I loved all the whey and casein powders. I think I was running protein deprived, so my body just was super happy when ever I started to suck one down. The few I didn't really like straight up, I loved if I put in a blender with kale, 1/2 c fruit and 1/2 c yogurt.

After surgery, ick.

I read here about somebody else that could only drink Oh Yeah!'s after surgery and that saved me for the first month or so. Health before diet.

I also found that I could handle beef isolate protein:
muscle_meds_carnivor.jpg

This is Muscle Meds Carnivor brand. 6 carbs. They have lots of flavors and I like the chocolate and strawberry so far. They make a cappuccino flavored one that is awesome, but very hard to find. I buy that one from amazon, which gets expensive, so I wouldn't do for anything but my morning coffee fix!

Now that I am six months out, I can deal with whey again, but I haven't tried casein yet. I still have a problem getting enough food in, so something that filled me up for 6 hours is not quite on my agenda. I have also gone back to the trick of using yogurt, fruit and kale in the blender to make the drink a treat, even though it takes about half my allowed carbs to pull it off. But I figure, what the heck else am I saving the carbs for?

I have started once a week goal of a "Powder Free Day" There are DS people who don't use protein powders but get all their protein from food. Mind blowing, at least to me. I have yet to make my 100 g + goal without some powder, but just learning exactly what to choose in the attempt seems to be a productive endeavor.

Thanks!

Most of them smell so bad I just can't do it! I need to find one with no carbs that doesn't smell!

I hear ya. I discovered Optimum Nutrition Whey Isolate. They SMELL great and they TASTE great. The Rocky Road is to die for. I bought the Carmel Toffee fudge, Rocky Road and Strawberry Banana. I actually look forward to drinking them! LOL I just ordered another Rocky Road, a banana cream and Mocha Cappacinno. I bought them on Amazon. Very low carbs, vitamins and Aminos and digestive enzymes and Lactaid!!!!
