Found it - I was already pretty close looking on the map, following it up the river.

I've never been around that part of the country. It looks remote and beautiful. I don't know if I could live in remote though. At least not for months at a time. I'm kinda a cityish girl.

"Any one too skinny after WLS may shrivel to a desiccated little raisin down there!"
I would end up caramelized to perfection.

I was planning on retiring in Belize, but I could snowbird it :) (1/2 the year scuba diving, 1/2 the year in Los Gatos). Belize is going up in land price, but they've got nationalized health care if you become a resident. And Southern Belize is still not too expensive to buy land...
But it is pretty far from civilization as the nearest box stores are in Mexico. And I would avoid Belize City as the crime rate there is awful...
Thinking on this, I might have to re-think my Belize retirement because of the DS. Good thing I haven't bought any land yet. :D

I've been reading the stuff on where to retire (anywhere that's not here) for years, and Belize is always on those lists. Like you said about the city, crime rate seems to be one of the main drawbacks. I was also thinking snow-birding in Belize, but am starting to think more about home swapping with people all over the world, so I can get as much or little of Belize, or Barrow, or Belgium as I want. I will be agressivley recruiting other DSers in a few years so we can have a network of homes with bidets and freezers of bacon on the ready.

I've vacationed in the south of Belize a few times a love the scuba diving, the ruins, and the people. The only other prohibitive thing besides the crime rate in the capital city (the rural areas aren't crime free, but not dangerous either) is the politics. If the British army ever pull out of Belize permanently (they're not much of a presence now, but they seem to come back whenever Guatemala gets territorial) it would be bad for residents, citizens and landowners. But I don't think that will ever happen. They pulled out in 2010 I think and seem to come back whenever things between the two countries start warming up.
