I'm terrible with math. So DS math is like a foreign language.

So can someone help me understand this DS math to help me calculate my daily calories in my quest to drop some extra weight?

So every morning I have 2 large scrambled eggs with 1/4 cup of Kroger colby Jack cheese and 5 pieces of bacon..

Cheese is 100 calories, 8 grams fat, 7 grams protein for cheese less than 1 carb.

Eggs 140 calories, 10 grams fat or 90 calories from fat, 12 grams of protein and 0 carbs for the 2 eggs.

bacon is 300 calories for 5 pieces. 225 calories from fat. 25 grams of fat. 0 carbs and 20 grams protein.

1st question is that too much to eat trying to loose weight? It's a total of 540 calories. THATS almost 1/2 of the 1200 calories recommended to loose weight. This is for my 1st and 2nd breakfast. I don't eat it twice eating it is just spread over 2 hours. So like 3 bacon and all but a bite or 2 or eggs at 6am then the remaining egg and 2 bacon somewhere between 730 and 8.

Second how do I do DS math to determine how good or not something is? Thanks in advance

At 1200 calories, you will more than likely gain weight.

Really easy to figure out what isn't ideal for a DSer to lose....if it has carbs, don't eat it OR eat one/two bites. Keep your carbs low and focus on those as close to the animal as possible.

Wow 1200 i will gain? Every diet clinic, nutritionist or dr i ever went to told me to loose weight they put me on a 1200 calorie diet. Even the scales that calculate calories needed to eat to maintain or loose weight say that if I eat 1200 for 260 days I will loose 70 pounds and be at goal weight if 118.

i do get the carb part though.

You NO longer fit the same box as those who go thru diet clinics, nuts, doctors, books, scales etc. YOU malabsorb. How much is individual but for every 10 grams of protein, pretend it's 6 grams. For every 10 grams of fat, think of it as 2-3 grams, for every complex carb, think of 10 grams as the same as 6. However simple carbs are 100%.

well then thats probably why even though I'm in the gym 5 days a week 2 hrs a day I'm not looking. I figured if eating 1200 calories with a normal stomach will make me loose weight the it definitely should make me loose weight since I malabsorb some of those 1200 calories I would be good. Thanks for the explanations

Ok, your example above.
Total Fat is 8 + 10 + 25 for a total of 43 grams of fat. 43 x 9 (which is how many calories per gram) is 387 calories. BUT you only absorb 20-30% of that fat. So even if you go conservative on that, at 30% (12.9 grams absorbed which is nowhere near enough for brain health), it's 116.1 calories of fat absorbed.

Total Protein is 7 + 12 + 20 for a total of 39 grams of protein. 39 x 4 (calories per protein gram) is 168.9 calories. BUT you only absorb 60% of that protein. 60% of 168.9 is 101.34 calories.

The one gram of carb is complex and is not enough calories (4), to add to this.

So even at 555.9 calories (added 387 and 168.9), you have only absorbed 217.44 calories.

Your body thinks it is starving and it is..

Do NOT make this about calories. Count macros.
Get 120-150 grams of protein in every day.
Get 100-150 (or more) of fat in every day.
And aim for about 50 grams of carbs a day. (More complex based and on days you exercise, make it 70-80).

DS math is actually really simple if you know how to calculate percentages using decimals.
Fat is 9 calories per gram and absorbed at 20% = .2
Protein is 4 calories per gram and absorbed about 60% =.6
Carbs are 4 calories absorbed at 100% (Its said complex carbs are absorbed at a lower rate but i calculate it at 100% so I don't eat them).

So for example, if you ate something that had 15grams fat, 20 grams protein, 20 carbs, the math would look like...
Fat- 15g x9= 135 × 0.2 = 27 cal absorbed
Protein- 20g×4= 80 × 0.6 = 48 cal absorbed
Carbs- 20g×4= 80 x 0 = 80 cal absorbed

Eaten total (135+80+80)= 295
Absorbed total (27+48+80)= 155

Why are you on 1200 cals? Try following the diet suggestions Dr. K. gave you instead.

@Settledownnow Must you ask? if i was able to follow a strict diet I never would have needed a DS to begin with. Reminds me of people who never had a weight problem saying why don't you just stop eating? I am trying to follow his diet but keep it under 1200 calories. Did you not notice there was no bread or taters, lol? I even eat the boiled eggs for snack and tuna for lunch that he told me to. i lost 9 pounds. I don't believe that just because you are eating protein you can eat ALL YOU WANT. There still has to be a limit if I'm wrong then so be it. Its going to be hard to reprogram. plus no matter how hard I try I cannot just eat straight protein 7 days a week every meal. So a couple of meals a week I eat lean cuisine which I did discuss with Dr. K when he told me what to eat.

THANKS I UNDERSTAND DECIMALS!

@Snowbutterfly LIGHT BULB MOMENT. LOL
o.k. so the carbs is wrong? because 80 x 0 =0 not 80. But basically what ever calories you get from carbs you get everyone of them.

So I did DS math on mý meatloaf Lean Cuisine.

fat 7 grams x 9=63× .2=12.6
protein 20 grams × 4= 80×.6=48
carbs 25 grams × 4= 100×1= 100
eaten 63+80+100=243
absorbed 12.6+48+100=160.6
