Not a science/math whiz?

There is a running joke at work about clinical social workers not doing math—that’s why we do social work. I needed statistics for grad school and once that was done I was out. I was in an honors Biology/English combination class as a college freshman and my professor once said “Lynn whatever you do don’t go into science.” Lol! I reminded her of that last Thanksgiving and she looked mortified. I could write the hell out of the papers though so I partnered with someone who was strong in science but hated the writing. Fun fact: my biology professor and I used to exchange poems. She is an amazing writer.

I'm a mathematician mainly because I fell in love with the drama and passion of mathematicians past. There was the great debate of who founded calculus - Leibniz or Newton - that divided Germany and England for many years. I love that Leibniz and Newton seemed to care the least of all. I love how Leibniz' brilliant, simple notation was what allows us to solve differential equations. And Lewis Carroll - it wasn't all just about Alice traipsing after a rabbit. And the raw, pure genius of Ramunujan's mind. And, the bromance between Briggs and Napier and the wonderful tale of collaboration that followed the Wonderful Rule of Logarithms. I love how these people saw possibility and infinity and the elegance of the universe and had the energy and gumption to pursue their ideas, right or wrong.
