I have taken two trips by train (Amtrak), the last one was First Class where I had a sleeping booth (shaped like a phone booth but horizontal) and I loved it. only thing is, I got to my destination 12 hours late and am told that is better than usual. clearly, not the best thing, if your schedule can be off by that much and more. I am told Amtrak doesn't own the tracks and so the train has to pull off and wait when anther train comes along. stupid, how much better trains are in other countries.

still it is a beautiful way to see scenery, so relaxing! all there is to do is eat, sleep, read, look at the view.

this site is making me want to take another train trip

I LOVE train travel. Dh HAS to face the front of the train or he gets motion sick.

Last time we were traveling by train, we upgraded to a Handicap room (I have a permanent placard) so that dh could sit lay down much easier. He was less than 2 weeks out of DS surgery and we rode the (Southern) Crescent from NYC to Spartanburg, SC.

I don't have many bucket list items and a real train trip is one of them. I may have to do it solo because DH is so picky and would pitch a hissy if he can't have a private bed and potty.

I can't picture what the handicapped room looks like, Liz. I had a horizontal "room" really, it's a booth that makes up into a bed (with another bunk above if you need two) and I glanced into the rooms that had their own bathrooms.

you and DH could get one of those, K9.

or, forget him & I will take a trip with you. did you check out my link?

http://www.amtrak.com/servlet/Conte...dation_C&pagename=am/Layout&cid=1241210576239 It's not a bad way to travel AT all...plenty of room.

The deluxe bedrooms have bathrooms (including a shower) in the room. I love traveling by train - my first honeymoon was LA to Portland to Denver (we went to the Black Hills and Wyoming for several days) to Chicago to New Orleans to Houston to LA. It was fabulous. A couple of years later, we went back to Portland by train with a newborn and 4 year old (my stepson) and used a family room and a Deluxe room - the latter was the best. http://www.amtrak.com/onboard-the-train-sleeping-accommodations The accommodations seem a little different - but some rooms have TWO toilets!

"roomette" that's what I had going from Colorado out to California - I loved it, even though you have to leave for the bathroom. very cozy. not sure if I would have liked it for two people, however.

and when I finally got to my friend's house and went to bed? I could still feel the movement of the train. weird, but not unpleasant.

We love train travel. Been on them in Europe and all over the states. But they can get hung up and be MANY hours late. It helps if you think of the train as part of the adventure rather than the ride to and from the adventure.

Todd & I have dreamed about doing the CA Zephyr several times.. one day we will! Sounds amazing to us, and if we ever do that trip, it will be a longer adventure. We have several friends we miss who have moved out there, and have been waiving the "come visit, see, see- all this pretty stuff is waiting" flags at us.
