A while back, @hilary1617 suggested a product like https://mygardyn.com/gardyn-studio/ for growing veggies and stuff. It seemed a tad expensive to me at the time, since even the small version

would grow more than the two of us would likely eat.

But now that there is a chance that a large percentage of our agricultural workforce may be seeking employment elsewhere…and, I suspect, the decreased supply of both harvested produce and folks willing to work for what passes for “wages” in that industry…that might be an investment some would find reasonable. Especially if they could share with a friend or neighbor.

I’m still kind of holding out for something smaller, but may give in and just share with MiniSue and her clan. At first, the promised “five pounds per month” didn’t sound like much, but it takes a whole lot of wheatgrass, dill, parsley, peppers and such to make five pounds.

But you might be interested…

The meat packing industry (including both raising cattle and slaughter houses) could also be hit with workers seeking employment elsewhere, as you so delicately put it. I doubt many of us can add a cow or two to our homes.

We have a couple of local farmers who sell beef. Unfortunately we don’t have the freezer space.

🐓🐔?

APPARENTLY, we (in CA) are entitled to some poultry wandering around our yards…and we can all just put up with roosters.

Have you ever lived next door to a rooster going through rooster puberty? Weird, unhappy noises.

NC has the ability to have poultry in residential homes. I’m not sure of the exact law cause we never looked into it.

My sister in KY, who lives on the outskirts of Lexington on 10 acres has chickens and gets her own eggs. Too bad she’s over 6 hours away!

I like the idea of having your own inside garden as you can be sure of the quality and avoid recalls of food.

Be careful about exposure to wandering birds until the avian flu outbreak is sorted. Charles found our ravine's red-tailed hawk deceased on the ground in the woods yesterday and reported it. No signs of damage by a ground predator. Best guess is an illness or perhaps it dined on a poisoned rodent.

My sister doesn’t let hers wander.
