Ok. Odd question but my daughter loves everything about the UK, including Dr. Who. There is an episode where Dr. Who is chatting about the joys of fish sticks and custard. Well, I finally got around to buying her fish sticks and since she is allergic to eggs, the closest thing I could come up with to mimic custard was vanilla pudding. Can you say "disgusting" Uuuurrrggghhh

Is English custard different than the standard custard in the US? Are fish sticks the same as here? I have never been so grossed out in my life but I did try a fish stick dipped in vanilla pudding.

I'd like to make sure I gave her an accurate experience.

Thanks!!

I looked up the recipe. Looks like it would be a DSr's dream desert. I wonder how I can make that taste without the eggs....

This may be dumb but can you use egg substitute? I have never used them so I don't know what's in them. I have one that is allergic to eggs, but only in dense quantities. He can't have a plate of eggs, but if one is an ingredient in a dish he is ok.

The way to make such a thing without eggs would be a cornstarch pudding. You could make it with all cream and sweeten with Splenda for a sweet option, or you could do it savory instead.

I THOUGHT I was allergic to egg yolk...had a bad gastro reaction since I was 14. After I had my gall bladder removed, egg yolks are no longer a problem! Eggs are a known trigger with gall bladder disease.

Hi Southernlady,

Hers is anaphylaxis. Her first reaction was an ambulance trip at the ripe old age of 1. The doctors say she is only allergic to the white but it's impossible to get just yolk safely so we stay away all together. She's much better than she was then, she can now be in the same room as eggs without reacting but smelling peanuts will cause severe nausea. I need to have a doctor do a food challenge with eggs as she may have outgrown that allergy. She's 18 now :( and going off to college in the fall.

I've never heard of savoury custard either lol. The main difference that I am aware of is in the US it's super sweet and firm and usually cold. Here custard is runny, not nearly as sweet and is severed warm or even hot.

Also, fish sticks are usually called fish fingers lol so I have no idea what the dr was on about.

Funny anecdote: I don't know any women in the UK who follow dr who and I don't know any men in the US who like it lol

Ummmmm it is a joke! It's because he's an alien and gets earth food wrong. Fish fingers and custard for example. Custard is a sweet egg based baked dessert and your Mum makes it for you when you're feeling poorly or it is used to disguise hideous puddings in school.

OMG, we were laughing so hard reading this! MNL, I hope your daughter's interest in all foods UK isn't ruined - I hear Percy Pigs are something to experience!

Just be glad she wasn't into Klingon food from DS Nine, including big fat live worms.
