For me it was my Mother as daddy had moved out and started a second family.

The odd thing is...I did the same thing...my house, my rules (well, agreed on by dh and I as to present a united front). The very FEW times our daughter tried to negotiate the rules, she found out that it never went the way she had planned. Example, the time she had to be home at 14 from a girl friend's house on a weekend night if she hadn't already cleared spending the night there. We told her 10PM (felt that was very fair for a 14 yo). She said 11, we said 9. Then she tried 10:30, went to 8:30 at our end. She discovered that if she tried it went badly. BUT if she did follow the rules, we would (just often enough) change them to her favor. Basically, push against a fence, it gets tighter but behave within the fence, the fence got looser.

The strike has temporarily been suspended and the rooms were cleaned. We are now in arbitration, with my so-much-more-indulgent-with-my-kids-than-they-were-with-me parents acting as "independent" negotiators... This is at 7 and 10. I can only await the teenage years!!!!

I grew up in a "benevolent" dictatorship as well. I think Bill Cosby and I must be siblings. We seem to have had the same parents. Pure comedic genius! I do like Liz' approach of moving the line in the parents' direction versus splitting the difference.

The work got done this time around because rent came due mid-strike. And since the strikers had no income, they were forced to contemplate giving up their savings or pawning some of their belongings. The negotiations are focused on wages and hours. I'm off to NYC for all five workdays in the morning, so unless we come to a rapid agreement, this could become an interesting week ahead for Charles!

Is it just me, or is it a little strange that three of us on this thread (at least!) have husbands named Charles? Not only that, but they go by Charles, and not Chuck or Charlie or Chas. That was not such a popular name for our demographic(s). In fact, I have known hardly any Charleses in my life.

Odd coincidence indeed. Perhaps the name Charles is selected by discerning parents who pass along their good judgment to their children. Clearly Charles have excellent taste! ;)

I COMPLETELY agree!

Of course, in the case of my dh, it was his dad's name as well.

My Charles too. Because of this, while he was growing up, he was referred to by his middle name, the obscure and awful "LaVoy" (apparently named for an itinerant Holy Roller preacher who impressed his mother).

Well, since my fil used his middle name, my Charles had no problems using his first name.

And for the genealogist in us..DID you know that in the state of NC (and there may be others) that if Junior or III is not listed ON the birth certificate, using Jr is not legal?

We found out back in 2007 when we moved to the Wilmington, NC area and we had to present birth certificates for something at the DMV. (not sure if it was DL or car registration related). Anyway, dh had always used Jr with his...and NC told him that using Jr was not his legal signature because it was not on his birth certificate. HECK he even put Jr on his damned passport back in the late 90's.

And because my daddy was a Jr (it's on HIS NC birth certificate), he had to sign Jr as part of his legal signature til he died and his daddy died in June 1964 (50 years ago). Normally, a Jr stops being a Jr legally once Sr has died.
