Binge watching some old Rizzoli and Isles. Speaking of an army colonel, Jane said, "He has to reenlist..."

But...is that the right word? I just asked Mr. Sue, almost "on the spectrum" for all things military..."Enlisted swine reenlist...what do officers do?"

He can't think of the answer either.

Anyone!

According to MASH, enlisted swine also get bigger scars.

I thought officers are commissioned not enlisted -- need 4 year college degree. Maybe that colonel enlisted then got a degree and was commissioned -, but still he wouldn't re-enlist.

Odd that this is so hard to research - possibly because everyone in that situation understands it as well as knowing their name, so it isn't even mentioned.

What I could glean from this is the possibility that once you are commissioned as an officer, you are automatically extended unless you complete the OBLISERV for the previous posting and resign.

"United States Navy (USN) Officers:Retainability for USN Officers is limited by statute, which defines maximum service, and by resignation/retirement requests.

(a) Statutorily required separation cannot be waived unless the officer is continued on active duty by a continuation/administrative retention board; in such cases, retainability must be satisfied in full prior to issuance of cost PCS orders.

(b) If a resignation request is not received within six months of an Officer’s PRD, that individual will become eligible for PCS orders and, once notified of orders, committed to fulfill the associated tour-length requirement.
"

I thought it was re-enlist or re-up but I was never in the military. I remember talking to a Navy recruiter when I was in high school and was told I needed to lose 15 pounds - so that was that.

luckily for everyone!
