Has anyone taken a 24 hour urine calcium test?

Just got my results back: 13.1 ml and 380 ml (reference range 100-300) in a 24-hour period.

Obviously, that's high meaning I'm peeing out more calcium than average. Is that normal for us, seeing that we take so much calcium?

I won't be seeing the doctor for a few weeks and he's not a DS specialist, per se. So that's why I'm asking.

Thank you in advance.

Hi,

Had a # of these. As long as the iCalcium is hanging in there ok, we sort of just watch these.

You can't extrapolate from one persons' numbers. Mine weren't above 300, they were always low, sometimes really low. There was a little more concern about the protein I have in the urine. Low protein usually equals low calcium. I also have several other GI issues that compound my problems.

You would need to make sure that you don't have hyperparathyroidism, too much Vitamin D. If everything else is bloodwork normal, it is normal for the kidneys to get rid of excess calcium by urination.

Is there a reason why they did urine vs. all the calcium bloodwork types (iCalcium, Vit. D, etc.)?

Not sure why it was ordered. My last calcium was 9.2 and my PTH was 77 so I don't think I have hypoparathyroidism. My last vitamin D was 38.

Does that tell you anything?

Yes it tells me I question what the issue was of giving you a urine test. Did you get iCalcium done, what were your kidney values or have you had problems with the kidneys? If you have kidney problems it is possible you could have calcium issues.

Don't know what icalcium is, but my kidney and liver function tests have been excellent. I think that's because I was a lightweight and lost weight slowly.

iCalcium is the blood calcium not attached to proteins.

Have you had Dexa scans to see if you are losing bone? My calcium level goes up with the Vitamin D, down with the Vitamin D. If all of that is normal you might be taking in more calcium than you need.

I've had it done twice. No real abnormalities seen.

Have you seen an endocrinologist? That's who did mine (to ensure I wasn't peeing out my calcium).

I upped my calcium to 3000/day. I thought I was supposed to do that because my PTH was 77. Is that wrong?

Yes, it's an endocrinologist who ordered the test. I'm not sure what he's trying to figure out though, but it does seem like I'm peeing out my calcium. Or is it just when we take 3000/day, there's no way we can absorb it all? I take it in batches of 500.

What was your D? That is what I would have upped first.
D was 32 three months ago so I upped from 70k day to 150k of D. Then my D went up to 38 on the last test. So I just upped the D to 200k/day. I also upped my calcium. Should I not up my calcium and just wait for the D to hopefully climb?

Mark, sounds like you need the shot.

Your D needs to be high end of normal. And since they've moved the high end from 50 to 100 in less than 10 years, it's like hitting a moving target.

I take well over 4000/day & my 24 hour calcium test was OK you don't necessarily have to pee it out.

Your endocrinologist will probably have some ideas (DS specialist or not). You could also consult your bariatric team.
