Does anyone know what might cause a constant taste of baking soda from your throat into your mouth? I get it for a few days at a time, it disappears for a little while, and then back it comes!

Mmm...it's the same taste I've experienced when I've eaten baked goods that had too much baking powder in them. Perhaps it's something else in the baking powder that gives that taste. It's not a salty taste. Definitely more a burning, slightly acidic taste. It's not like heartburn, though.

Could it be silent reflux? I think that's what it's called when you don't necessarily experience the typical symptoms, but the acid is still traveling up the esophagus and doing damage. I forgot to take my Zantac for almost 2 weeks while traveling and came home with a nasty sore throat and swollen tonsils that sent me running to the Dr thinking it was strep or tonsillitis and it ended up being from the stomach acid.

@Parousia Baking soda or baking powder...they ARE different critters.
Yes, I know. Baking powder contains baking soda, but I thought the taste was from the baking soda (bicarbonate of soda) in the baking powder. In my next post I mentioned baking powder, because I thought that perhaps I had it wrong, and the taste in baking powder that I had always thought was from the baking soda was actually from another ingredient, and perhaps that is what I was in fact tasting.

Does that make any sense? Clear as mud, I suspect, lol!

It may be, but can that alternate with active reflux? I'm about to do a separate post about that, but this is so different and so odd, it just doesn't feel like it should be the same thing, lol.

Not sure, but I do know that my reflux manifests itself in different ways at different times. Sometimes I have burning & burping, sometime a gurgling at the back of my throat, and sometime waves of sharp cramps in my stomach when I've neglected to take my acid reducer for a week or 2 (I'm much more diligent now). Then there was that weird, pretty severe sore throat that went away within 2 days of actually remember to take my Zantac.

Did you ever find out what was causing the baking soda taste? And did anything help? I am going through this sensation right now. Never had before, and quite troublesome. I googled and your post came up. I have not had any type of surgery, but am suffering pretty bad post nasal drip. Seeing my PCP tomorrow. Would be interested in your response. Thanks

Sorry, I just saw this now. It seems to be related to gastric reflux, but it's not what I typically get. When I increase my reflux meds, it improves though. I still get it occasionally, then it's gone for awhile again, only to return. Did you get any answers?
