OMG - I'm a biologist by training, and NEVER heard of the Mantis Shrimp. That is FANTASTIC and I'm stealing it and posting it on my FB page, where my children, who also love sciencey stuff, will hail me as their hero for the day - because THEY can then repost to THEIR geeky friends!

I have actually seen them in a tank (well, one of them) and yes, they will chop other fish literally in half.. also obviously dangerous to fingers and such. One cool thing I learned, while snorkling around some warm waters... the sound underwater you hear, that sounds very much like frying bacon, is the sound of shrimp doing their shrimpy things.

That sizzly sound of frying bacon is them raising the water temperature to several hundred Kelvin! It IS sizzling! And that's fish-bacon you are hearing!
