VBG to DS Revision ?'s (Surgeon Decisions)

Looks beautiful. And Dr. Baltasar has a great reputation. And there are beaches...and presumably seafood. Sounds perfect for this middle ager as well. We could meet up in NYC or Toronto or Montreal and go from there... of course I might have a better time than you, but it sounds like a lovely place for you to recover for awhile.

Mary_J Is the 325 from the VBG or was that the weight you were when you had the intestinal portion done?
I lost about 40 pounds with the VBG and gained that (and more) back. The 325 was what I weighed the morning of my DS revision (intestinal portion).

I am eight years post op and a native Detroiter and have followed patients of Dr. L. On multiple forums over the years. I would not use him for a virgin DS, let alone a revision. I independently noticed a disturbing amount of his patients having serious (like in the hospital for months at a time) amount of complications, and deaths. When I discussed my hunches with other DS'ers, they had noticed the same. There was a reason OHIP dropped him like a hot potato as a provider years back. I would imagine that some research of people on OH that were patients of his might provide you with some insight. I do know three people personally who have had tremendous post op difficulties in the area of malnutrition. One just had to have her DS revised after developing an issue named "brown bowel syndrome" which is caused by chronic malnutrition. When doctors got in there to take a look at the mess Dr. L had made of her common channel, they found out that it was of an ungodly short length (I want to say maybe 15 or 30 cm). She has suffered terribly because of this, and was at one point told by several gastro docs that she was beyond fixing. Dr. L. had performed several surgeries on her to the point that they were afraid another operation would kill her. Fortunately, a surgeon from Detroit was willing to take the risk and she is doing better....she suffered extensive damage due to protein malnutrition and iron deficiency. His post op requirements nutritionally are downright dangerous. If I only had seen one or two people with issues, I would not be writing this with such candor. I am not one to criticize a surgeon without having a very good reason to do so. Please proceed wisely.
Look at your still skinnnnnny self.

Dr. L is not a good option. Sorry I didn't see this post earlier, I've been busy with getting ready to sell our home.

Dr. Baltasar is wonderful. I have nothing but good things to say about him as a man and as a surgeon. The Clinica is old but the care is wonderful. If you go to Spain do take a caregiver. I was caregiver for my H and my sister. Dr. B knew I could read the monitors so I did almost all their care and contacted the nurses if I had an issue. And that was funny because I spoke no Spanish and they spoke no English. Luckily one night when I needed help with a broken monitor the nurse spoke French and we were able to communicate. They make it easy for you. The food is excellent and the rooms are set up for the patient and a caregiver, 2 beds. Some of the rooms even have balconies.

Funny story, the night the monitor broke it just went crazy. I looked at it for a second and knew it was the monitor because my patient was in no distress. I went and got the nurse who started to seriously freak out. I disconnected the monitor from my H and put it on me...no change, still totally freaky. Luckily she grasped right away the monitor was broken.

There were quite a few American and UK patients there. I ran errands for everyone and set up internet access. We rented a condo in Santa Pola for a couple weeks after surgery and actually had a decent time. The beach was in walking distance along with a great coffee shop and several stores. I did go to some of the local markets, Alicante, and Benidorm. Beautiful place.

Thanks Sheanie.
Munchkin - I take it you were over there awhile ago, do you know if he's still working? Or how long he takes to reply to emails? Thanks for the recommendation.

Also, Greenbaum came back with a price of $15,000. Did I read somewhere that he does the SADI instead of the DS and states it's the DS? Or was that another surgeon?

Okay thanks @SHales. I did ask his assistant what that included and this is what she replied:
Good morning. The $15,000 is all inclusive (surgeon, hospital & anesthesia). The possible extra costs are for pathology, radiology and any specialist if there should be a problem. There are several area hotels that offer a slight discount for our out of town patients. It is an open surgery.

I'm thinking maybe they don't do the sleeve portion and just do the DS part? I will have to investigate.
@Elizabeth N., what's your opinion?

If he's begun doing SADI, it's news to me. Roslin in NY is doing SADI, so you might be thinking of him.

I'm pretty certain that the $15K price is all inclusive for the assumption of a normal procedure and hospital stay. You'll want to clarify that.

Um, I would imagine that this is a medical/surgical decision that he makes based on scope/imaging results. He did a DS-only procedure on a woman I know who had a VBG situation that had gone so badly amok that it would have been life-threatening to try to improve upon the mess. She fared quite well for weight loss, but could not be bothered to take a supplement or learn a damned thing about how to live right with the DS, and so suffered a lot of problems. That's not related to surgery.

The price is what has previously been quoted for virgin procedures, I believe.

Absolutely. His supplement advice sucks rocks, but he's a damned good surgeon and a fine human being. He would be my first stop if I needed a surgeon nowadays.
