So Lisa Marie Presley…

Overall not a bad article, though the question of which bariatric surgery she had is not really answered. Just speculation. But encouraging that the rate of both short and long term complications is so low.
I would add only that, as with other serious complications, it isn't just the complication that causes death or serious injury, it's the failure to recognize and/or treat the complication fast enough. If a small bowel obstruction, even one causing gangrene of a portion of intestine, is treated fast enough (usually within 6 hours or less), results are usually good. I of course have no way of knowing how things went down for her or why she ended up dying.

Very true! ANY abdominal surgery can cause adhesions, and some people even have an adhesion or two without having had any surgery, though this isn't very common.

She did have a C-section but my point to the people having a cow over this on FB that WLS is not her reason.

Didn't she also have issues for an extended time - like months! And she didn't get it taken care of? I've also seen on other forums that her opiod use may have contributed as well.

It's a scary story, for sure, but there's a lot of speculation going on and not really a lot of facts.

But it’s ALWAYS the reason!

I have raging osteoporosis. Surely, the DS-related malabsorption is a part of it. But I went to a new, young, smart m endocrinologist Monday. She says that sure, it’s probably making things A LITTLE worse. But I lost my ovaries at age 30, so I had a 20 year head start, compared to most women, on no estrogen…it’s been 46 years now…,which is a MAJOR factor in osteoporosis. That means that the average woman who has lived w/out estrogen for 46 years is 96 years old.

It’s like the endocrinologist I fired for stupid recently. She expected an elderly, obese type 2 who didn’t know anything about diabetes. I don’t fit that mold, other than maybe the “elderly”, after all I am 69 and to some that is elderly. I know quite a bit about diabetes including the fact that I’ve had reactive hypoglycemia since either 1991 or 1994 (I have both years listed so I’m not exactly sure). She insisted on blaming my “gastric bypass” for it even tho my DS wasn’t until 2011. I corrected her about the DS versus the RNY a minimum of 3 times explaining the difference. She still put RNY on my after visit paperwork. I’m also slim, except my middle, far from obese. My BMI was 22.x at the time of the visit. I was so far off her expectations, she got upset and rude, shut me down and refused to listen. I will give her one point. She got me the Dexcom CGM.

I see an osteoporosis specialist for my osteoporosis. The Reclast infusions I’ve done over the past years have stabilized me. I’m not getting better but I’m also not getting worse. I consider that a win. I know many can’t handle Reclast but I’ve been able to with minimal issues. My ovaries stayed put when I lost the rest in 1994. But if I had known before I had my surgery, I would have the entire package removed. I’m a DES baby. https://www.cancer.gov/about-cancer/causes-prevention/risk/hormones/des-fact-sheet My Mother didn’t tell me til after the fact.

I’m PROBABLY going to start with Evenity, for a year. After that, it’s a bisphosphonate. BUT…it may kill me.

Their warning says:

2846

And I already supplement calcium and Vit D, and it’s usually still low.

So there’s that.

And I keep reminding everyone, ANYONE can get a bowel obstruction. My oldest daughter had one and she’s never had WLS.
True. My first love died of a bowel obstruction related to his morbid obesity which I'm sure he ignored the signs. Or the symptoms were less obvious by the copious amount of substances he injected. It broke my heart and radically changed my desire to explore more dangerous drugs.

I’ve heard of that one but being newer, Medicare hates to pay for new drugs. ONLY reason Charles get Prolia is his history of a severe kidney stone which takes all bisphosphonates off the table. Prolia was his only logical option.

Ut-oh. I have kidney stones. I keep getting kidney stones. And she is of the “a year of Evenity followed by a bisphosphonate” school of thought. I need to talk to my urologist. Shit.
