hey guise

I have a very hard time eating most cruciferous veggies raw. Lettuce is especially bad. I get overwhelmingly nauseated right after I consume it, and if I ever do eat a plate of raw salad, it causes diarrhea (watery ahem sorry if TMI).

Does anyone else have this problem here? Luckily, raw veggies aren't a a big part of the post DS meal plan lol. I was just curious if anyone else had these issues. Salads just look so healthy, and I do like the taste of raw veggies. I asked my doctor, and I was told to try some OTC antacid which didn't help at all. The only raw veggies I can handle (and not in exorbitant amounts) are cucumbers, carrots and beets TBOMK (i.e. to the best of my knowledge henceforth :D ).

Thoughts? Experiences?

Thanks:3

I can't eat any raw veggies. I can't eat raw carrots, broccoli, cucumber, cauliflower. (I can eat any of those cooked.) Salad is not my friend. The best I can do is a plate with edamame, mushrooms, nuts, cheese, and dressing. It makes me sad, but I've accepted that it's not part of my diet. Every once in a while if I'm really craving salad, I'll order one and then basically eat the toppings off of it.

I think the fact that you are pre-op and have those issues.

I've had this for at least 6-7 years. I also have this other 'issue' where I have to run to the washroom right after I eat, and I end up having loose stools and a stomach ache. This comes and goes, though. I haven't had this problem in a while ( 7-8 months). I tried an elimination diet, and when I stopped eating paneer (a kind of cottage cheese), it really helped. Though, I don't think it was the only variable. I was traveling a lot, so that may have had to do with it as well.

Yeah that is weird. Pre-op I could eat any veggie raw or cooked no problems. Post-op completely different story. Crunchy or over cooked and mushy. Raw lettuce is a no go it comes right up. Hopefully this will change I do love a good Caesar.

So far, and it doesn't quite make sense so I just attribute it to my new alien insides, I can eat raw cucumber, celery and cabbage (in coleslaw) but not any types of lettuce yet. Field greens, iceberg, spinach all do a number on me. I would've thought that the crunchier things would be tougher than the tender leaves but not so much. Quite a few times I've had what I refer to as "non-salad salads" where it's diced chicken, chopped egg, bacon bits, sunflower seeds and whatever else protein-ish to toss in covered in ranch or blue cheese dressing. It's good, but would love to have more cold crunchiness of raw broccoli and cauliflower and such. Hopefully one day! :rolleyes::whistling:

No problem before surgery, but can only eat cucumbers and one bite of slaw cabbage after. I really miss salad, but manage to console myself by ordering Cobb salads "hold the lettuce". Yeah, get some raised eyebrows, but they bring it and it's good.

Do you still have your gall bladder? My Mom was unable to eat those items once her gall bladder was removed. I do not understand why it just happened with her.

In normies and those who have just resstrictive surgery, the gall bladder helps in digesting fat. But we have so little left for that process and the common channel is so far removed from the pyloric valve that we don't have the same problem.

A good friend of mine (a normie) had hers removed the summer before I ended up losing mine...she STILL has issues with fatty foods. However, I just have the same issue MOST DS'er have...80% +/- of the fat ends up in the toilet.

I have this issue too (pre-op) so you're not alone. At home I can usually eat salad without issues, so I've figured it's either my body doesn't like the special vegetable wash many places use, or there's gluten in the dressing. (I'm celiac)

Not sure if that helps, but that's my problem with salads. :) Love them, but they don't love me!

yup, i do. might get it removed during my DS.

@Taterweight

Ah, I can't eat salad anywhere. Immediate and severe nausea. It's not a big deal, of course. I've come to love steamed veggies etc. and other salads that don't involve what I can't eat. I was just curious if anyone had any theories on why this is hard. The doc, as I said, prescribed antacids that didn't help. I read online that probiotics had helped someone, but they didn't do anything for me in this case.

Also, it makes sense..the celiac and gluten connection:).
