He's staying in ICU at least one more day. His BP was higher today than it had been yesterday. At one point it got to 253/157. It's been 175-180/100-110 all day long. Part of it was miscommunication on the floor...the hospitalist wanted him to lower the injectable BP medicine they had him on and switch him back to a longer acting pill that he had been on...while 140/90 is not ideal to what *I* am familiar with apparently it's fine in this case. They want it high normal but they can't seem to get it there. My sister (the one who is a vet) and I talked to the hospitalist and he thought he already had started the pills...when I told him that no, he hadn't...he got concerned (DUH) and went looking to the chart. Next thing we know the nurse is in there with another injectable dose. Nurse said the order to the pharmacy had been called in by 8AM but at 12, it had still not shown up.
He wanted to go to the toilet...no sitting on a bedpan. With 2 nurses and 2 grown daughters, we still were unable to get him to the toilet. He didn't want the nurses at all (they are strangers), he really didn't want his daughters to help but we were one step preferred over nurses, he would have preferred his sons in law (at least they are males) and Cathy was acceptable (she got back about the time the worst of it was over) since she was his wife not his daughters. But after he "stood" up (with three people supporting him, and a failed attempt at taking even one step to the toilet, the nurses made him lay back down. He promptly took hold of the end of the bed and it took Dawn and a nurse to break his grip on the end of the bed...and Dawn is no weakling. She's the vet. She said that if he had been one of her animals, she would have sedated him.
Liz, Wishing you and your family comfort during this stressful time and wishing your dad a speedy recovery. Grumpy is definitely a good sign. So sorry to hear of this.
Today was two steps backward...he is very lethargic and basically unresponsive most of the time. Not grumpy at all today On the up side, his BP is running much more normal now...as in just high normal (135-140/85-90).
I'm on my way back to the hospital...he had another CT scan this morning and on Mondays, all the neuro's are present for rounds. I'm hoping he had a good night
Liz, hoping the scans provide clear information and the doctors come up with a good plan. We're all thinking of you and hoping for the best. Hang in there!
