I had a consult with a hematologist a few weeks ago regarding my iron deficiency. During our appointment, she referenced some relatively recent iron supplementation research that I had not heard about. The doctor explained that they are finding when people take a large dose of oral iron, the body releases its iron regulator hormone helpcidin, which basically stops the body from absorbing any more oral iron for the next 48 hours. They are hypothesizing that it might be more effective for people to supplement with a single, large iron oral dose every other day instead of taking smaller doses multiple times a day. Journal article from The Lancet here.
She said there are few more studies researching this in the works with IDA patients. Sorry if this was already posted- I tried to search but didn’t see anything. I thought it was notable, and am interested to see what future research shows.
