I had PT at home and told the Physical Therapist that one of my goals was that I wanted to be able to safely reach my lower dresser drawers, even though I was told not to bend more than 30° at the waist.

And…I came up with a little “trick” that I figured was something I shouldn’t do, since no one had suggested it. Finally, I confessed, thinking I was breaking some rule. He was impressed! He said I did a very good hip hinge, which many people have trouble performing. It goes like this:

Usually, my left arm is on the dresser, I “hip hinge” over so that I can reach Into the bottom drawer with my right arm but without bending my spine. Turns out that my “easy solution” is something that some people need to learn to do and practice.

I’m special. Would anyone like an autograph?

beautiful!

for following hip replacement (but only with high-level patients) I have taught the "golfer's reach" for getting things off the floor without breaking hip precautions. (it's called golfer's stance at the link)

:)

Impressive! Does it hurt to do it though? I try to never bend either because I can’t get up without everything in my back crunching and hurting. I do the golfer’s reach or I get on the floor but need something to pull myself or push up on. OR I get the kids to reach for me. They’re younger and their backs are healthy!
