I am home from my surgery...

First night home, I slept through most of the night till my cpap ran out of water. I get dry mouth very quickly. Im sure this has been asked a bunch of times but how long dose the belly pain last?

Did you have lap or open?
I had a bit of soreness but nothing I would call real pain. After the morphine in my IV ran out on day two, I was switched to a non narcotic med which worked fine.

Glad your surgery went well...keep moving as much as possible..walk as much as you can. And obviously keep drinking...all day long.

Welcome to the Dark Side...sip, walk, rest, repeat. And I agree with Diana, get a copy of your surgical report (usually takes 2 weeks or so for them to have it).

As far as belly pain...the gas left over from the lap procedure hurt worse than the belly did.

Just recheck your cpap before going to sleep so you don't run out of water. And hopefully, that will become a useless piece of equipment. BUT do not stop using it on your own. If it's an adjustable one, that will help. Your sleep doc will probably decide when it's time for a retest. My husband unfortunately still has to use his altho his has been dialed down considerably.

The morphine was awesome for sleeping, I had Lap so I have 7 stab wounds on the surface of my stomach plus whatever they did on my insides. The pain I still have is surface pain, with some gas pains...I can feel my body digesting which is something I was never able to do before...it is a strange feeling. I'm a little worried because when I was at the hospital I was having bowel movements semi often, since I came home I have been passing gas, with very little bowel movements, but since I have been home I have been able to drink my protein shakes which I couldn't do in the hospital. I figure I need to drink at least 3 premier protein shakes a day.

Dennis,

Just a shout out on those protein shakes, two things:

(1) The rule of thumb is to target 30-60-90 (30g/day by 30 days after surgery, 60g/day by 60 days after surgery and 90g/day by 90 days after surgery.
(2) Some people, like me, become lactose intolerant post-DS. Many protein shakes have a high lactose content and can result in gassiness for those who are lactose intolerant. I drink "Oh Yeah" shakes by ISS as they are lactose-free.

Stay hydrated and feel better soon!
Hilary

Go slow on the protein. Sip and see how you are handling it. For me, the pain from surgery lasted a few weeks. Not the external cuts but, the internal. Bowel movements hurt like hell. I could feel everything moving through my intestines and it hurt. I rushed and had a piece of toast at about 3 weeks out (can't tell you what the hell I was thinking) it gave me stomach spasms that I thought would send me to the ER. Just go slow and follow your surgeon's orders on food progression. Stay on the liquids for as long as recommended.

Okay 1st full day home, still only passing gas at home, my nurse told me give it 24 hours because the last day in the hospital I didn't eat much, maybe half a pudding. Today I had 1 and a half protein shakes so far about 45 grams of protein, I ate a sugar free popsicle, and about a cup and a half of beef broth. and I have been trying to take in a full liter of water all day. I walked every time I ate, and went on an extended walk just after dinner. I have tried to stay sitting up all day but all I really want to do is lay down so my stomach wont bother me so much. I'm prepping my CPAP Machine now for bed, I'm debating on taking my Oxycodone because I was told it my slow my bowels while I sleep and given my concern for the lack of Bowel movements I'm unsure how to proceed.
