So I got insurance approval, however dr wants to do an upper GI before I can get scheduled for surgery. Is this normal?

I don't know if it's normal, but my doctor did one. It helps him find out if there are any issues with your esophagus or stomach before the surgery. For example, I had a hiatal hernia that I had NO symptoms of. He repaired it during my surgery. The important thing is that he was aware of it before my major surgery. It's more for information than anything else.
