since @Paula reminded me in the fiction thread, who likes non-fiction? I like all kinds but almost always have a "self help" book going. if I implemented everything I've read, I guess I would be perfect. :angel7:

currently reading The How of Happiness.

very excited to go to the Library Monday, among the books on hold for me is (finally) Grain Brain.

Yay

In my honest opinion, a person can't go wrong with almost any of the books written by Jon Krakauer. I didn't much care for Eiger Dreams, but loved everything else of his. Especially Into a Thin Air, Under the Banner of Heaven, Into the Wild, and Where Men Win Glory.

Eric Schlosser is another good author. I've read Fast Food Nation and am currently reading Command and Control. This one is about the development and proliferation of nuclear weapons, accidents at a Titan II ICBM missile silo in Arkansas, and the illusion of safety. It's written in a way that is not all boring high tech geek.

If you are the type who loves creepy and weird, one of the most interesting books Ive read is Frozen by Larry Johnson. It was about his time working at Alcor...that cryogenics place in Arizona that believes you can be cryogenically frozen upon death and then reanimated at a later date. Your whole body, just your head...it's apparently all good. As I said, creepy as hell...but a damned good read if you like the weird and bizarre.

I loved Into Thin air and Into the Wild, need to try the others. somewhere someone mentioned The Gift of Fear, that is excellent.

The Overspent American is already on my list; I will check out the others.

I heard there is currently an outbreak of ebola in west Africa & it reminded me of how frightened I was reading The Hot Zone.

at the time, visiting Africa had always been on my bucket list but I remember thinking I didn't want anything to do with a continent that could have such a thing. I have since gotten over it (we aren't safe anywhere, after all) but I think this review on amazon sums it up:

"One of the most horrifying things I've ever read. What a remarkable piece of work."
--Stephen King
