I am keeping my thoughts and posts separate, it will help me organize my thoughts. Sorry for 'blowing up' the board. My next questions are about supplements. I have completed all of my pre-surgery labs, and what follows are the portions of my labs that are not within normal range.

PTH, Intact - normal = 16 - 65pg/mL, my number is 71
25 Hydroxy Vitamin D - Standard = 30 - 50 ng/mL, my number is 20, which they categorize as insufficient
I am including Calcium because I have read posts on this forum about the above levels and calcium, mine is normal. Normal is 8.4 - 10.2 mg/dl, mine is 9

They have recommended that I take 2000 IU daily, and they have given me a prescription dose of 50,000 units 1X/week.

I have read various posts regarding vitamin supplementation. I saw vitalady's recommendation. Should I start with those, or wait until my first labs come back to decide how to supplement, taking multivitamins in the meantime. The recommendations Geisinger has given me for vitamins so far seems legit (as far a forms of vitamins) but are in now way a comprehensive as the vitalady list (WOW!).

As a pre-op, the prescription D MIGHT help.

BUT you need your D up ASAP...above 50 is minimum..as close to 100 as possible is ideal.
That will help bring your PTH down.
The reason your calcium is fine is your HIGH PTH tells me it is doing it's job of harvesting your bones to help keep your blood calcium in proper range.

For reference:
D range in 2007 was 15-50
By 2010, it was 25-85
Now it is 30-100.

Okay, I was diagnosed with very low D in 2007...so low they couldn't even test it.
Was given the prescription and took it FAITHFULLY until summer of 2010 when I met Vitalady (our vitamin guru) and DS'ers who were taking the dry D3.
By that time I had gotten mine from non testable up to 35. Stopped my prescription and switched to Dry D3. In Oct 2010 since I knew I was headed to surgery soon, I bumped it to 50K a day. By Jan 2011 when I had my surgery, it was 54. I had to play with my post-op dose to find MY right dose (for now) and it's 50K every week day and 100K on weekends. My D typically runs about 110-115 and my PTH is usually 16-25. EXACTLY where I want it.

IF these were MY labs and I was having surgery in the next 6-8 weeks, I would take 50K a day of dry D3 minimum. IF surgery was scheduled in the next 4 weeks, I would double it to 100K. But that is what I would do.
