I think we're going to buy this one

Charles is very good at making good use of small spaces. Our house had 3 bedrooms and 2 baths when we bought it, and without expanding the footprint at all, it now has 5 bedrooms and 4.5 baths (well, technically, 4 bedrooms, because we co-opted one bedroom into an office, but that can be undone before sale if necessary). This was possible because Charles built an apartment - the pool house - out of part of the garage (a three-car-sized structure, which was a two car garage and covered patio, now enclosed under the roof); finished the unfinished partial basement by dividing it into two rooms - a good sized bedroom and full bath, and the exercise room which is not a legal bedroom because it has no window; and he divided the silly overly-large main floor bath into a more reasonable sized one plus a powder room.

When we moved to San Jose in 1999, we rented this house, and then a year later, when the lease was up, we bought it. When we planned the move, it was supposed to be just Charles and me, and my two kids. But then his older daughter came out for a visit and decided to stay. And then a few months later, my father moved in with us - we needed more rooms! And later, his younger daughter moved out here and moved in with us too.

But - as I told him while he was building it, and as people came and went - if you build it, they will come back. And they have. At the moment it is just the two of us - but - I'm willing to bet that by Xmas, we will have more roommates again.

So, I'm in favor of living on a commune with a bunch of you, in cottages with only one bedroom, a sleeper sofa in the living room, and a communal guest house for TEMPORARY visitors.

Did someone say Commune? And thank goodness we have an attorney who can draw up legal papers to define Temporary visitors. Otherwise, I know my free-loading kids would attempt to move right in. They love bacon.

I envision a commune for aging DSers. We will find some land which is connected to CITY sewage (first requirement) by oversized pipes (second requirement). Then we will build cottages without kitchens, but well-appointed living rooms and bedrooms, with now fewer than two toilets per cottage (third requirement). There will be a central to-die-for kitchen, with multiple Sub-Zero fridges and freezers, Wolf ranges, Brevilles and KitchenAids, where people can take turns cooking meals for the group, or you can go to make your own between-meals BLT. We can raise chickens for eggs. There will be a heated pool, for exercise. Room for gardens, both flowers and food, for those so inclined.

And it will be somewhere with no snow or tornadoes. Perhaps the Oregon coast?
Sounds great, Di! As long as it is somewhere beautiful with a pleasant climate, I would be happy to live there one day ;).

I missed this one the first time. I adore tiny houses and already have a plan purchased for a really whimsical one, but not the right place to plunk it. They should all have great porches, so you can sit outside and fart with impunity without asphyxiating yourself inside.

Hey if you purchase one you don't have to worry about the kids moving home. I might have to invest in one of these in 3 years when I retire. Cause I don't think my kids will ever leave the nest. Lol my daughter was gone a year and came back last month but i have to admit I'm happy that Toot wakes me up every morning wanting juice in his cup. Climbs over his mother in bed to come wake me. Then I found out why she really moved home. Her and my son think I have cancer or Alzheimers. But That's a total different post

Having Toot close to you is great BUT why they moved home is just NUTS!
