The diet industry costs Americans at least a billion dollars/year. In this case, it also cost some people their health or their lives:

We've all been there. We want so badly to improve our health, our appearance, our quality of life, and these some of these products make amazing promises. But as the article points out, these nonprisciption products are not well regulated, and not required to prove either safely or efficacy before they hit the market. This particular product is no longer available, but there are and will be many others because the market for such products is huge.
