So I am somehow oblivious and never noticed the "My Journey" forum was here. I've had updates spread out over multiple threads. I figure it's probably better to confine my narcissistic ramblings to one place.
For people who might come across this in the future, and want to see more on how things started for me, try this thread.
So I just wanted to update anyone who was bored enough to be interested on how I'm doing. I used MFP to set my nutritional goals. It determined that in order to maintain my weight, I'd need about 3710 calories per day. (Really?!) So in order to lose 1 pound a week (which is what I have it set to), it's made my calorie goal 3250 calories per day. While I am NOT counting calories, when I log everything into MFP every day, I am not even coming CLOSE to 3250 calories most days. I usually am coming in around 2000, sometimes as few as 1400.
I am never hungry - 90% of what I eat is meat, cheese/yogurt & veggies, 5% is fruit (berries and cantaloupe) and 5% other (I typically have a barley wrap a day as part of my lunch, have an occasional piece of dark chocolate,etc.). MFP said in order to get carbs at about 25% of what I should be consuming, my total carbs should be 163g or less, so that's what I've been aiming for. Definitely not super "low carb," heh, but it's been low enough (and I've been eating few enough simple carbs) that it seems to be working for me. I either meet that or am well under that amount of carbs most days. I typically get about 100g of protein daily.
I would ideally like to up my protein and decrease my carbs a bit more, but I can't really do that without totally cutting out fruit, or cutting out my barley wraps, or cutting out a less-than-once-a-week night eating out with hubby. I'm just quite honestly not willing to do any of those things at the moment - I'm feeling really healthy and balanced right now, the weight is coming off, and I'm not going to put myself into bootcamp mode for no reason.
On the rare occasions when I have a serious sweet or carby food craving, I've found Diet Coke will actually knock it out for me, so I keep a case of those on hand (even though they're ludicrously expensive here in Aus. Can you Americans imagine paying $30 for a 24-pack of soda? I think my family, with as much soda as they all drink, would have a heart attack at seeing those prices, haha). I do love the carbonation, though, so I find them hard to resist - I typically have one probably 4-5 days a week. I know, soda isn't great, but... priorities.
I do still want to work on upping my water intake. I'm getting probably 48 ounces a day and I'd like to see it higher. As hard as it is for me to get it in now, I know it's going to be harder when I eventually have surgery. I've been putting in a little bit of straight-up lime juice to make it more palatable.
I actually seem to be losing about a pound a day right now. The exception was while we were moving (had about a week where I had to consist on takeout - did the best I could, but definitely wasn't perfect) and then right before my period when I gained 7 lbs. overnight (no doubt all water) that came off again post-period.
I'm only 11 pounds away from being under 500 pounds, which would be 100 pounds lost for me total since January and a milestone; I haven't been under 500 pounds since 2006, I believe. I came really close when I was working with an eating disorder therapist and a nutritionist in 2012, but when I got right above it (502) and just couldn't lose those last two pounds, I freaked out, threw up my hands and started gaining again.
That's not going to happen this time. Thanks to therapy, and to the way my life has changed, and the way my attitude has changed, I'm ready for this. It'll happen. It'll either happen now, on its own, or it'll happen post-surgery. I don't have to freak out about it, either way. Either way, I've made some amazing strides, and I'm really proud of the changes I've made for myself and my health.
