I'd read previously that being MO shortens life expectancy by about 8 years, this article provides at least a partial explanation and shows that bariatric surgery can reverse this trend. Of course as usual it's about gastric bypass, but I would think the results would apply to the DS as well, as the DS creates better average excess weight loss and more metabolic changes than gastric bypass.

I would add, and this has nothing to do with the results discussed in this article, that if someone is MO with serious comorbidities such as diabetes, sleep apnea, etc, remaining MO with these comorbidities probably shortens life expectancy even more.
