So my hubby is a big guy. He's overweight but his build is big...he's got very broad shoulders. He was a competitive weightlifter in college.
He got on the scale after me the morning we left Mexico...last Wednesday dec 3rd.
He weighed 257. I weighed 196 I think...a lb more than I did the day of surgery (thank you IV fluids).
Just this week starting Monday he decided he needed to lose a few lbs...his pants were getting a bit tight.
We had company come in from out of town the day after we returned from Mexico for a long weekend. Hubby likes to cook and bake for company.
I had cooked a big pot of red beans and rice and sausage for everybody that first night. He made a couple loaves of homemade bread. He made rocky road fudge, butter cookies, French toast pound cake with a maple pecan icing, he baked an egg, sausage, and cheese stuffed crescent loaf...etc etc etc. he liberally ate all of that stuff. We also got fried seafood poboys over the weekend and we had my company Christmas party the Saturday night that had tons of fattening foods.
I, of course, couldn't have any of any of that stuff. Which was fine with me.

So this morning he's getting ready for work...I'm laying in bed still half asleep and he asks me...how much did I weigh in Mexicali? I said 257 why? He said I was just wondering. I said how much do you weigh now? He leans over and kisses me and said I love you...I said oh I'm going to hate you aren't I? He laughed and said uhhuh. I said HOW MUCH? He just kept kissing me saying I love you. Well, I was wide ass awake at this point. He said bye baby...have a good day as he was walking out of our bedroom. I jumped out of bed and followed him and said again....HOW MUCH? 245. I said yep, I hate you. Get out.

Yesterday I was 187 down from 196 the day we left Mexico as compared to him...257 down to 245 in the same timeframe. He sucks. His metabolism obviously works quite well.

Ok he doesn't really suck and I don't really hate him. He's quite wonderful in every way and I'm very happy that he can lose weight that easily. he does struggle a bit with his weight and knows he needs to get a healthier weight. He is very willing to eat whatever I eat...he doesn't want us eating different things so once I can eat real food again, he will likely lose just from that...eating the way I do. We just won't be able to have any company over...lol

Around the time I had my DS, my husband - a Coke-aholic of the first order (2 six packs a day, PLUS 2-3 32 oz Big Gulps) - agreed to taste Coke Zero, which had just come out. He refused to drink diet Coke, despite his mother dying of NASH resulting from T2D, his own issues with high cholesterol, TGs, and borderline high fasting blood glucose, and the fact that he was carrying 50+ excess pounds, almost all in his gut. To my surprise, he found Coke Zero acceptable, and replaced at least the 2 six packs a day of regular Coke with the Coke Zero (and cut back on but did not quit the Big Gulps).

Imagine my mixed feelings when during about the same amount of time it took me to lose 35 lbs with my DS, he lost 30 lbs by MOSTLY stopping drinking regular Cokes.

My dh had his DS 5 weeks before I did (he's coming up on his 4th year in a few days). Anyway, he lost far more than I did at the one month out...

BUT % of lose...I ended up losing faster than he did. I got to normal BMI in 7 months. He took almost 9 months to reach normal BMI. (oh, and he is a lightweight as well).

So just do what you need to do for you and just say "good for you" to him as any lose of excess should be celebrated...even if they do have a seemingly easier time of doing it.

It was a joke! Lol
I love my honey..and am very glad for him that he's able to simply modify his diet a bit and lose weight. I would never want anybody especially my love to have the issues I have!

@star0210, sweetheart, I knew you said that in jest and understood your intent. All the Ladies here realize that there is a significant difference between MOST men and women’s metabolisms. Hell, our @Munchkin has made a whole career saying such!!! I’m just feeling sorry for myself right now that’s all. And that rarely happens, I never get down or depressed. I guess that’s why I joke about everything. But, I swear to you God please strike me dead if I’m lying or exaggerating when I say I have been living on less than 200 calories a day for 3-4 weeks now, a week before Thanksgiving and have only lost about 6 lbs. MOST men would have lost 1-2 lbs per day at this starvation caloric intake level. So, thats a sensitive subject w/me right now...lol

But, you are sort of that way too. I call us “super absorbers” and actually, when I get time, your thread inspired me to post another thread about my observations I have had regarding this topic of how the DS effects men and women differently in conjunction with the wide range of the varied metabolisms in both.

He still drinks that much coke, just mostly in the form of Coke Zero now - he says he "needs" the caffeine ...
But, at age 63, he's now down 70+ lbs from his high weight, and due to the abdominoplasty he got as a part of his medically necessary hernia repairs in September, he also got back his girlish figure (as he says) - he has congenitally weak fascia and had a protruding belly even when he was skinny, due to the diastasis recti, which has now been repaired. His metabolism is still pretty fast though - and if you can imagine, he lost about 30 lbs since quitting smoking (which he had to do in order to get the surgery). He confounds me.

you are allowed and, after all, these are The Dark Days. the armpit of the year, if you will. I think that's why tradition makes everybody bake sugary treats and bring them to work to torture us all. :grumpy1:

seriously, allow yourself to feel some self pity - it's temporary. better times ARE coming!

I'm lol'ing at all those big technical words that I have no idea what they mean.

I feel ya....it's damned frustrating! That's what drove me to the revision. At first my hubby didn't understand...he assumed I would be like him. He insisted it was a simple matter of calori's in, calories out. I explained it to him and then went "back to basics"....he either saw or I showed/told him everything I put in my mouth for several weeks. Pretty much 700-800 calories a day...all protein and some complex carbs in the form of green veggies. All except one day where I had a few bloody Mary's. At the end of that experiment, I had gained two lbs. he said ok, I'm convinced. Your metabolism is broken and you need the surgery.
