I made it home today. I'm not in as much pain as I thought I would be... Mostly just sore and tired. Anesthesia was a bitch. I didn't wake up for a full 24 hours when I should have been walking and sipping during that time. The nurses tried to make me walk to wake me up and they almost ended up picking me up off the floor. She said all 3 of the bariatric patients had a hard time waking up that day.

I'm chewing on Sonic Ice, slurping chicken broth and melted jello. And walking every 2 hours. Tomorrow I can start yogurt and cottage cheese. That painful lump on my left side that goes clear to my back when I take too big of a drink is no fun.... Yogurt will be interesting.

My Nexium question goes like this.... I KNOW we need a PPI after surgery. I have been on Nexium or omeprazole for over 10 years for Barretts Esophagus and GERD. (Nexium is far superior IMNSHO). When I was being discharged the nurse told me to stop taking it. I was like WTF? Seriously? She said I wouldn't have reflux anymore. Ummm hello.... The night nurse had to give me protonix in my IV the night before because I couldn't even lay down. It was the orange jello that started it. Sooo.... I'm going to keep taking my Nexium. I'm sure you all know it's a plastic capsule. How long do I need to wait until I can take it? Should I open it and pour it in something or can I just take the capsule?

I am so happy to be on the other side. It wasn't painful like I thought at all. I even slept on my side in the hotel last night. My stomach is just really tender and I feel like I could sleep for a week. Thank you everyone for all your support and especially @newanatomy for being my Angel and answering a gazillion questions and @Mandy too. And thank you to the moon and back to @Larra and @DianaCox for making this all possible!!

Glad you're doing so well. I had to open capsules and shake them on the back of my tongue for the first 2-3 weeks. (Every doctor has different rules.) Yeah, you need a PPI for at least 3 months if not forever.

(Uh, ALL the patients had trouble waking up? Anesthesiologist needs to be reported.)

When they gave me my going home packet today in prep for our early morning getaway they included a bottle of Nexium and she said to open it and put it in a little water and swallow. She said they wouldn't dissolve. I haven't taken one

The nurse mentioned something about wondering if they were doing something different. But said that I was the last to wake up.

Make sure you don't bite down. As I was telling Amey on the Duodenal Switch group on FB, those little balls in there will smash into your teeth if you accidentally try to chew them.

It sounds like that nurse was giving you RNY advice, not DS advice. One of the few, maybe the only advantage of RNY is that it is very effective at relieving GERD. The DS does not have this advantage, and almost everyone needs something for GERD temporarily, and many of us permanently. So if you need the Nexium, take it. If, 6 months from now, you don't need it, that's great, but don't count on it.

Overall it sounds like you're doing great, esp considering the mess you had from that lap band.

So true...
I am still on a PPI (I use Prevacid as Prilosec did diddly squat for me pre-op). My dh was sent home with Nexium powder (it mixes in water but even on a prescription it was terribly expensive) Turns out, he never needed it. I was 5 weeks behind him so I used his Nexium powder for awhile (figured I may as well since I NEEDED one and we had it).

I did try to come off about 2 years ago...lasted, I think, three weeks before I just could not take it any longer. Only day of that three weeks I wasn't miserable was the first 12 hours.

Apparently sleeve size has something to do with it in the DS. Larger sleeves, esp those who didn't have a history of GERD pre-op, seem to not need a PPI long term. Small sleeves (or in my case, tiny sleeve) seems to need help.

I still need a PPI. I take Prevacid, too.

If you aren't having trouble swallowing a pill, I think you should be fine taking it without breaking it open. I just never had any trouble swallowing after my DS. My throat was a little sore post-op due to them shoving things down it. But I could drink enough to swallow a couple of pills.
