My girl cousins were mostly nurses. Two are still working. One belongs to DMAT and her team is being deployed to Wisconsin for the next two weeks.

Good that help is on the way, but bad that infection rates are so high they can’t handle it locally. USUALLY, her unit is deployed to go to hurricanes and tsunamis and Haiti and Fiji. But, okay. Wisconsin.

We're just across the border and about an hour ago, my mobile received an emergency alert, to which I'm adding a 4th and 5th W, avoid WISCONSIN - where on top of COVID extremes, today there was a mass shooting, in a WAUWATOSA Mall.

Imminent Severe Alert
Effective today, all of Illinois enters Tier 3 Mitigation. Work from home when possible, avoid unnecessary travel, and celebrate the holidays virtually with extended family. To slow the spread of the virus, remember the 3 W's: WASH your hands, WATCH your distance and WEAR a mask. Please stay home to save lives. Learn more at https://bit.ly/3kKCy7r

It’s scary.

Because of the pandemic, MiniSue’s BF’s boss sold his company as HE was recovering from COVID-19. Luckily, the parent company figured out that they HAD TO hire him, as he was the only person who knew how to cause their purchase to function profitably. They gave him a big raise, but no office. Meanwhile, MiniSue had transferred to her current position THE DAY her employer sent almost everyone to work from home. She went into the city to get an ID phitobtaken and a parking pass. But she had no office, no desk, no phone number, no company computer. And BF has every other week custody of his 5th grade daughter, whose school went to 100% distance learning. All in their teeny, tiny little cottage. (They could afford to move to a bigger place, but by L.A. standards their rent is dirt cheap and would increase by $1500-2000/mo, which they would rather save for a down payment on a place of their own.)

Guess who has an “extra” room behind the garage. Certainly mot huge. Maybe 200 sq ft. It was built, on permit, as a storage room, not a habitable room. Slab floor, no attic, no heat/cooling, no running water, uninsulated walls and ungrounded electrical that would run too hot for modern electronics. MiniSue will move her office to that glorious location and on alternate weeks, the little one will do school here, too.

Ergo, my kid who is the local Three W’s police, also needs me to have electricians, drywall people, painters, etc here...but nowhere near me...even though I’m the in-charge person here. MrSue is a co-in-charge guy, but his hearing impairment requires my presence.

If what I had in late Jan. early Feb, was not a mild COVID-19 case, and I have no antibodies, all of this adapting to COVID-19 will probably expose me to COVID-19...with all these workers…and kill me. (I’m in the high risk age group with pre-existing pulmonary and other issues. There is no reason I shouldn't think of myself as a potential COVID-19 fatality. I have too many messes here that I need to clean up, so I am not READY to die. But few are ever REALLY ready, right?)

So, I’ll wash the cloth masks, sanitize the N95s, have plenty of the blue surgical masks, keep my distance and…the hard part…remember to WASH my hands.

I’m trying to NOT WHINE. Anne Frank was 14 when she moved to that attic. She lived there two years and 15 days before being captured. And her diary (and I’m in the “I believe this IS her diary” group) STILL reveals her optimism...with all that was happening.

BUT…WTF does Time of Day have to do with coronavirus exposure?

Bars and restaurants have to close at 10:00 pm in some states, 11:00 pm in others. Why?

Mary lived two streets up from me in HS. Her boyfriend, Paul, loved her in spite of Mary’s parents’ strict curfews. No Sun-Thurs dates or get-togethers…her parents both had to be at work the next day and Mary had to be at school. Friday and Saturday her curfew was 10:30 pm. Mary and Paul managed (as I believe the coronavirus will) a simple work around. She got pregnant while her parents were at work and she and Paul cut classes. The coronavirus will simply infect people before the bar closes. How stupid is this?

Been a while since I've been in a bar late at night .. used to hit the Plow and Stars in Cambridge, a raucous garrolous bunch as any I've seen . IIRC.. the later it got, the drunker the crowd got, and the more careless they became. Early closing makes a lot of sense to me

Re "She got pregnant while her parents were at work and she and Paul cut classes.".... once again this is a somewhat distant memory for me, but when I recall restrictions on youthful intercourse, they had the same effect as pissing in the Atlantic. Theoretically, there is a difference to the ocean's chemistry, but so slight to be immeasurable. When the urge struck, it struck hard and any where anytime anyplace was the rule. Hard, for me, to compare that drive to modest precautions against respiratory disease transmission.

So,IMHO, not so stupid

Oh... you this one... we live in a federal system and the fed has been remiss in setting uniform standards

That leaves it up to the cities and states to set their own disparate rules, not all of which are designed for optimum public healh

Aha! My perspective is skewed. Most of my youthful years (aka drinking time) were spent on shift work. My friends (and I?) were capable of getting irresponsible at any hour! Including when we got off work at 7:00 am.

[Example: a few years back, I called an old friend who was dying. All of a sudden, it was…
Luther: Hey, Sue! Remember that time when I crawled under the table at that bar and set Charlie’s shoelaces on fire?
Me: As a matter of fact, I do!
Luther: You know why I did that?
Me: Since that day, Luther, I haven’t given it much thought.
Luther: Well, see...Charlie HAD a girlfriend and all you girls were paying attention to him and ignoring me…and I had just been dumped by my wife. That’s why.
Me: Well, I’m sure as **** glad we settled THAT.

Given that that type of behavior occurred during what was broad daylight outside, the 11:00 pm-6:00 am curfew would not have made a dent. Admittedly though, we WERE the minority!). (Which, as you can see, was a good thing.)]

Yep. Longer time at the bar, more drinks, lower inhibitions...

According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, 31% of fatal drunk-driving accidents occur on the weekend, and the highest number of drunk drivers is on the road between midnight and 3 a.m. Fatal crashes are also four times higher at night than during the day.

Oh no! Stay safe! And consider an air filtration solution and how to maximize ventilatoin where the workers will be, plus maybe hang a big clear shower curtain in the doorway so they can speak to you through that.

For what it's worth, I'm super high risk for COVID too, with my sordid repeated pulmonary embolism / dvt history and current health situation. Scary indeed.

Take good care of you.
