I am losing bone in my mouth, I have teeth that the roots are now showing, i take Citracal (650 mg) 3 times a day. And calcium carbonate (600mg) per day. I was wondering if something else I’m not taking could cause this. Also been arguing with hematologist about another iron infusion. He says all my blood work is good, Hemoglobin 13.3, hematocrit 40.4, iron 70. When ferritin was taken a year ago it was 62. Any advise or suggestions?

What is your D and PTH?

So sorry to hear.

I had bone rib cage pain and needed a specialist at Yale. My numbers were ok.
Since 2018, I take about 3x the citrate that you’re taking and a Rx called Rocaltrol. This will be for the rest of my life. Perhaps you’d be interested?

I’m afraid to take more calcium because I keep getting kidney stones. What is Rocaltrol?

D is 31, I don’t see PTH, would it be called something else?
It’s called PTH. And with a Dof 31, it’s no wonder you are having issues. D needs to be on the high end of normal. https://bariatricfacts.org/threads/vitamin-d-webinar-by-dr-keshishian.5845/

Do not get a prescription, go to Amazon and look up dry D 3. I‘ve used Biotech 50,000, Nivegan 50,000, biophix 50,000, and Forest Leaf 50,0000. You need at a minimum of one a day. Some take as much as 400,000 to 600,000 iu a day to get their D up where it’s supposed to be.
https://bariatricfacts.org/threads/i-have-osteoperosis-now.906/ I still have osteoporosis but I’m pretty stable. My osteoporosis specialist is over the moon at my PTH (14.4 range 11 - 65) Calcium (very high normal) and D (also very high normal).

PTH stands for parathyroid hormone. Your body needs to keep your calcium level (what would show up in a blood test) tightly controlled because calcium affects the function of your heart. So, if your body is low in calcium, it "steals" it from your bones. Your lab test for calcium would look fine but your bones would suffer. The body does this steal with PTH, so if your PTH level is high, that's bad. If your PTH isn't being tested, there is no way to know whether or not you are stealing calcium from your bones to keep your blood level normal.
So, you need a better level of D (you are barely scraping into the normal range), and you need to know your PTH level. Taking more D is easy, southernlady has already given you the names of the "dry" products available. Many of us take what would be huge amounts of dry D for a "normal" person but it's what we need. I take 50,000 units twice a day. My may also need to take more calcium, and DianaCox once provided an excellent explanation of why this isn't what causes kidney stones, which hopefully is somewhere on this website, and her biochem background is better than mine so I won't try to repeat it here.
So first step, get your PTH checked, up your dry D, and go from there.

Next... Always do the simple easy stuff first. I have learned a lot lately because my partner has periodontal disease. I have gone with him to multiple periodontal appointments. And, most people over 30 have it. By all means, work on the D, do this other stuff too. A lot of periodontal disease is caused by infection. Pockets of bacteria below the gum line that also leads to bone loss. This is not DS related.

Here is what I changed and it is working. After a short period of time, I have more gum and less tooth exposed. My gums look healthier too. I now use a toothpaste with stannous fluoride because it kills bacteria below the gum line. Here is the one I am trying right now. https://www.amazon.com/Crest-Pro-He...rds=crest+I+bought&qid=1626199758&sr=8-7&th=1 After I brush, I use an antiseptic mouthwash to kill more bacteria. Generally speaking, less bacteria leads to better gums and better oral health. Your mouth will never be bacteria free but this helps. I also use a calcium apatite toothpaste a couple times a week.

It’s interesting that you mentioned this toothpaste. I noticed recently how gum detox is a hot buzzword in the toothpaste aisle right now. I’ve been considering getting a new one as a result of that and what you’ve indicated. I was told a few months back my gums were receding and to ease up on the tooth brush pressure so I’ve switched to a sensitive brush and sensitive setting on my toothbrush but I’m noticing some gum issues so I think I need to move into the new paste / wash. Thanks.

Thanks for all the helpful replies, I think I need a new Dr. I’m taking every suggestion and taking action! When I questioned my hematologist, he said Don’t you trust me! I don’t anymore, he only does a small portion of the blood tests I need. It’s time I be my own advocate.

Also, you mentioned taking calcium carbonate. That's not generally considered a good form of calcium. I know many people who take several types of calcium to increase the chances of getting more in. I personally use calcium citrate, calcium hydroxyapatite, and calcium orotate.

Ignore my comment about carbonate--two posts down is one referencing why it's helpful :)
