The Medical Minute: These Researchers are Developing a Weight Loss Medicine with Cannabis
By Bailey Rahn — 8/26/2015

Imagine a world in which cannabis is listed as one of the key ingredients of a weight loss medicine. It may sound like an amusing irony to those of us easily afflicted by the munchies, but a recent study published in the journal Endocrinology suggests this idea isn’t so far off. Apparently, a mixture of vitamin A and cannabis constituents holds promise as the next solution for obesity.

"The results of our study show, for the first time, that particular compounds in cannabis and vitamin A can work together to reduce the deposit of lipids,” said researcher Dr. Yann Gilbert. "This finding opens up exciting opportunities to potentially treat obesity without the need for invasive surgery."

Researchers discovered that by activating the body’s retinoic acid pathway with vitamin A and the endocannabinoid system with cannabis compounds, fat deposits were reduced in the cells of humans and chubby zebrafish. The synergy between the two systems is key, and researchers also note that this approach leaves the brain free of cannabis’ effects when administered in low doses.

With so many over-the-counter weight loss medicines posing dangers as “hidden ingredients” slip past FDA approval, it’s refreshing to see researchers pursuing solutions in the endocannabinoid system. We’re already clued in to its role in appetite regulation and metabolic processes, and given the fact there have been exactly zero fatal overdoses from cannabis, why not harness what this plant offers us?

If all goes well, the study authors predict this cannabis-based medicine will be developed and ready for human use in the next five years.

@newanatomy what you know about Snoop? JK Lol I cant imagine anything with cannabis in it help anyone to loose weight. My son has his marijuana card and he will eat me out of house and home. They give it to cancer patients so they will want to eat????? But hey maybe when I retire I will try it with the large quantity of vitamin A we take. LBVVS

Seeing that I'm not a fat zebra fish, it probably won't help me.

I do have some foggy memories of me eating a whole package of oreos MORE THAN ONCE. Reefer madness. And now it will make you lose weight too!

But I'm betting we have all done worse!

I feel bad, the most I did was 3 donuts in a sitting. I'm very tiny, so any weight on me is noticeable. My sister has done more donuts and the like and I'm wondering how she did it. I ate fries, I liked baked goods. Ice cream and chips and the like, I could eat a few but never got the hang of. Baked goods are another story and bread is a huge downfall.
