I have tried to research this without any success. A friend of mine had a daughter who had been in-house substance re-hab for about ten months. She was out, clean and sober for about a month. She got her first Covid vaccine without problems. When she got her second, she went to the ER stating she wasn't feeling well. She went home and had a heart attack in her sleep and died. She was 29/30? The autopsy stated it was an adverse reaction to the vaccine.

I realize that there may not be any information about this. This is all the information I have about the situation. Anyone have any knowledge about how substance abuse affects the body?

In the meantime, I have decided to eat the cake (figuratively), burn the fancy/smelly candles, and travel as much as I can to see family and friends.

Not sure about a correlation with substance abuse, but do you know which vaccine she got?

Maybe this?
“Thrombosis with thrombocytopenia syndrome (TTS) after Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen (J&J/Janssen) COVID-19 vaccination is rare. As of July 12, 2021, more than 12.8 million doses of the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine have been given in the United States. CDC and FDA identified 38 confirmed reports of people who got the J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine and later developed TTS. Women younger than 50 years old especially should be aware of the rare but increased risk of this adverse event. There are other COVID-19 vaccine options available for which this risk has not been seen. Learn more about J&J/Janssen COVID-19 Vaccine and TTS.

  • This adverse event is rare, occurring at a rate of about 7 per 1 million vaccinated women between 18 and 49 years old. For women 50 years and older and men of all ages, this adverse event is even more rare.
  • For three weeks after receiving the vaccine, you should be on the lookout for possible symptoms of a blood clot with low platelets. These include:
    • Severe or persistent headaches or blurred vision
    • Shortness of breath
    • Chest pain
    • Leg swelling
    • Persistent abdominal pain
    • Easy bruising or tiny blood spots under the skin beyond the injection site
But you said it was after the second shot, and J&J is a single shot. So perhaps myocarditis or pericarditis?
Since April 2021, there have been more than a thousand reports to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) of cases of inflammation of the heart—called myocarditis and pericarditis—happening after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination (i.e., Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna) in the United States.
  • These reports are rare, given the hundreds of millions of vaccine doses administered, and have been reported after mRNA COVID-19 vaccination, particularly in adolescents and young adults. View the latest information.
  • CDC and its partners are actively monitoring these reports, by reviewing data and medical records, to learn more about what happened and to understand any relationship to COVID-19 vaccination.
  • Most patients who received care responded well to treatment and rest and quickly felt better.
  • Confirmed cases have occurred:
    • Mostly in male adolescents and young adults age 16 years or older
    • More often after getting the second dose than after the first dose of one of these two mRNA COVID-19 vaccines
    • Typically within several days after COVID-19 vaccination

This is a link to the adverse events page on the CDC website for all vaccines. Go down to the SARS vaccines. There have been very few deaths reported that MAY be associated with the vaccines.

And of course, there is always this:

“Successful graduates of 28 day abstinence-based rehab programs are at the greatest risk for drug poisoning death of any population because of lowered tolerance; those who continue to use heroin during 28 day treatment or drop out early are far less at risk than successful graduates of these programs. Newly released inmates are at far greater risk of drug poisoning death than the general public or inmates in prison.”

Thank you. I'll go to the references your cited. I couldn't help but think she was at a higher risk because of her history of substance abuse. I just couldn't find any information.

I read about the adverse reactions which caused me to view the vaccine with some skepticism. Unfortunately, the reality of people I knew family, friends, and former co-workers made the risk of remaining unvaccinated the lesser of two evils.
My condolences to you and your friend on the loss of her daughter.

Thank you for you condolences. When I got the message, I sat there and cried. I'm still sad and angry that people don't believe Covid is real.

On a side note, I was in Atlanta for a convention. Like many places, the hotel has lifted mask requirements for fully vaccinated people. I saw a few mask wearers, mostly the members from the Bahamas district of the convention. No one from the Japan district attended. I'm a bit more relaxed in crowds, yet every now and then an acute twinge of anxiety pops into my head.

I'm sorry for your loss.

I know withdrawal itself can be a huge challenge on one's body and there is heightened risk while using, during rehab and afterward.

Addiction is highly complex and given its nature, it's probably difficult to "hold all else equal". This study links increased mortality post rehab to tobacco use. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/8601929/

A few nurses have tearfully reported that even as the anti-vax patients are put on their ventilators as a last, fruitless attempt to save their lives…they continue to insist that THEY don’t have COVID-19.

I’m a terrible person. But every time someone who refused the vaccine dies, my mind automatically jumps to a passage from Heinlein’s Time Enough for Love, which theorized that emigration was one way to increase the IQ of the human species - that having what it takes to recognize that taking the leap to leave what you know to hope for something better is a form of natural selection for intelligence and survivorship. In the case of this quote, it referred to those willing to leave the Earth in the future, but I think it applies to people who are willing to take risks, to go against what their community holds to be “true,” and to leave their comfort zone behind.

“But space travel can't ease the pressure on a planet grown too crowded, not even with today's ships and probably not with any future ships - because stupid people won't leave the slopes of their home volcano even when it starts to smoke and rumble. What space travel does do is drain off the best brains: those smart enough to see a catastrophe before it happens, and with the guts to pay the price-abandon home, wealth, friends, relatives, everything-and go. That's a tiny fraction of one percent. But that's enough.”

So when an anti-vaxxer dies, I think “the average IQ of the planet just increased a tiny bit.”

I guess I'm a terrible person, too. I subscribe to Aracamax comics and columnists. Each day I get comics: One From the Right and One From the Left. I was quite pleased to see the Left and the Right agree on something.
