So I had an iron infusion today of iron dextran and it went well. I had a wonderful experience with the nursing staff at the infusion clinic and was there about 4-5 hours. I don't feel any better now, but I'm hoping to greatly improve soon.

Thanks for all of the support!

It may take more than one infusion to get you feeling better, but so glad it went well and staff treated you well.

Hope you start feeling better now and I'm glad it was a good experience. My sister (RnY patient) has needed these a number of times throughout the past 10 years. She always feels much better in a few days.

update: day after iron infusion, I have a bad headache and feel like I've been hit with a tranquilizer. Much like I did pre-infusion. Hopefully it gets better soon. My hematologist says it could take 7-10 days to feel better. Ugh....

Ooh, sorry to hear that.

I am so sorry to hear that you've been feeling so poorly. I always thought that when you get an infusion, you are better immediately, however, it takes awhile for it to do it's magic. What are you taking for the headache?

Blood transfusions work right away, but not iron infusions. The iron is used to make red blood cells so it takes the body a little time after an iron infusion. For this reason, if someone is extremely anemic they may have a blood transfusion first.

The first time I had a Dextran infusion the next morning my nail beds and tongue had a rust colored tint! I always remember hanging out in bed most of the next day. Dextran is not used as often anymore due possible side-effects such as allergies (and headaches, etc.).

To prove if it helps or not. Some doctors have a hard time believing we malabsorb.

Okay.

And I believe.

Can't get my Vit D where it belongs. My Vit A tested fine last time, but I have a few symptoms of Vit A deficiency right now. My D was 25 in November, I got injections (of A and D) in February and the D was "all the way up" to 35 in April... barely within range. AARGH!!! PCP wouldn't test for A, so I went elsewhere, had both A and D retested, results next week.

Update: I'm two days out post-infusion and I made it out of bed! I even showered! However, I've spent the rest of the day glued to the couch to binge watch the Mindy Project but the world is looking up.

That's scary about the rust colored nail beds! The only think I have is a small bruise on my hand where the IV was.

I'm so thankful for you guys. Not even my medically-inclined friends truly understand what anemia feels like and that an infusion isn't an overnight fix.

So glad you are doing better Rhondajs.
