I’m guessing she had access to drugs that allowed her to ignore the pain.

I'm sure she was doped up on enough narcotics to dull the pain. If she had chronic pain issues beforehand she could have mistaken it for other things coupled with the pain meds. Those of us with chronic pain are often bad at gauging the degree of pain we are in and narcotics would definitely have interfered further with it. Such a sad story...
