So, I hurt my back and I've been laying around in pain for the past week. Everytime I move I spasm. Obviously going to the potty sucks! My husband has to go to work so I'm alone during the day and more than once I've ended up laying on the floor when I tried to walk to the bathroom. I think subconsciously I've not been eating and drinking like I should because of I'm scared of having to get up. Plus I've been taking medicine that makes me loopy and all I want to do is sleep. I basically drank enough water to keep my pee clear and the spots out from in front of my eyes.

Today when I got up I got on the scale because I realized I haven't since last week and I weighed 118!!! I've never been below 120 before. It was a huge wake up call that I've probably been starving my body for the past week. Aaaack. It should come right back if I get my ass in gear, right? :(

Oh, Shannon, back pain sucks pond water. I know you are spasming but movement DOES help. You can easily lock up by not moving. I know it sounds counterproductive but getting up and moving helps.

But you NEED to eat.

Question, who are you seeing about your back spasm? Your PCP or have you seen a specialist? I was very pleased with my spine doc there...and he would have done my surgery if I had stayed local. He doesn't like doing surgery unless it's last option so it's not that he is "cut happy" but I had already had one spinal surgery so we knew the other options would not help.

His name is Dr. Michael Walsh

I know how you feel, I'm dealing with my 2nd disc herniation. It's no fun, especially when everyone leaves and you have to suffer by yourself :(

I hope you feel better soon and keep eating !

Ack @shann ! I have back troubles for many years and I agree wholeheartedly with Liz, you HAVE TO MOVE! It hurts like hell at first, but laying in bed was actually the worst thing for me, everything would seize up completely but once I started moving and loosening things up it gets better throughout the day. Hope you feel better soon, and at least drink some shakes!

So, my doctors both said to lie flat?? I got out and moved around today. I went back to my doctor today, and he gave me steroids, muscle relaxers, and hydrocodone. A lot of my friends are suggesting a chiropractor. I don't know?

I have had very good results from a chiropractor when it's been bad enough that I can't function, I will say something that's totally my opinion though- do not let a chiropractor touch you unless they want to see X-rays/an MRI first. If they'll adjust you without that, then they're not responsible and can do further damage.

Also, depending on what exactly your problem is, laying flat on your back could make it worse. My issue is herniated discs in the lower spine (I can't remember the names) and laying flat on my back is the single most aggravating thing for me. I have to either lay on my side or MAYBE with my knees raised, otherwise it totally seizes up. I would try sleeping on your side with a pillow between your knees tonight and see if that helps.

Mine were L4/L5/S1 (that was in 2006) and my neurosurgeon told me the reason that sleeping in a recliner was the most comfortable was that position put the LEAST amount of pressure on those damaged discs. My newest one was L3...it's heading toward the middle of my spine.

Right now, they think it's either a strained muscle or a pinched nerve. My doctor said if this course of treatment didn't work we'd do MRIs or a nerve study, but my insurance requires we just do meds first and see if they resolve it. (It sounds so minor described like that, but it sure as hell doesn't feel minor when it hits) THANKS for all the advice girls :)

Oh, understand...I had the MRIs, two nerve blocks, physical therapy...etc all before finally saying enough was enough. What was my final straw was the loss of feeling (altho intermittent) in my legs...that's when I ended up in a wheelchair. My neurosurgeon back then gave me a 70% chance of healed (esp the feeling) I took those odds cause it was a 100% chance of me ending up in a wheelchair full time.

I just wish one of the other options had worked but it didn't. But they are more than worth a shot to avoid surgery...back surgery truly needs to be last option.

oh, no - I hope you can get some relief. consider a physical therapist instead of a chiro...

@southernlady - Did this all start as an injury or from an accident for you? Or just natural degeneration? Just curious. My father has had chronic back problems his entire life, so I can empathize with your pain.
