Hair loss and vitamins

Girl Friday, I am in no way demeaning your experience and fear of loosing your hair - you can give it back to me in just a few months, but I gotta tell you I laughed out loud at you running into your Mom's bedroom at 5:45 am to get her to look at your head. Probably scared her silly. :)

She has had to put up with me for 41 years. She is pretty unflappable at this point. Although, the night I busted into her house in my pajamas with a loaded syringe because I couldn't give myself a B12 shot threw her a little bit.

So, reading thought this, there is really nothing I can do about hair loss? I don't want to lose my hair, I like it. And I have long hair and I like it long. Any hope.

Just keep your protein and vitamins in excellent range and hope you are one of the ones not affected. Most are but not everyone.

I lost more hair when my thyroid went kaflooie than after my surgery. When losing hair due to thyroid you typically lose patches in the front, I had to change the way I parted my hair to cover bald spots. After the DS, I lost hair all over. I kept my hair long and it grew back in. The hair loss is not due to the DS but to the surgery. Buckle up, you are in for a bumpy ride. It will get you to where you wan to be though.

Which tests show a whacked thyroid? T3, T4? I'm having my thyroid tests again with my DS Oct. bloods and want to know what I should be looking for b/c I've read thyroid can interfere with hair and mine has thinned in the front over the last 2 years.

For me, my TSH was high. Currently, I take 75 Mcg Levothyroxine and my TSH is still a little high (above range) and my T4 is a bit low (below range). It is not enough out of range for my PCP to be terribly concerned. He had me retested 6 weeks from my last blood work and wanted to test again in 6 weeks but, made no changes. Bullshit, in my opinion. Why keep retesting when you have made no changes to the meds! I am not paying for all these tests. I am just taking an extra Levothyroxine once a week. I know tons of people take 150 Mcg of Levothyroxine every day so, I bumped mine a bit. We will see what happens with my tests next year.

The hair loss can come from a low TSH (hyperthyroid), too. Post when you get your numbers.

I had my thyroid go wacky 15 years ago and had Graves disease and lost some hair. A wacky Thyroid makes you really sick, but it's totally manageable. My hair grew back. I've taken Levothyroxine for years and it needs to be checked once a year.

If the hair loss is like that, I can deal with it. But hoping for none.

thanks all.

I will.

Has the Levothyroxine helped w/your hair?

I will.

I started the Levothyroxine about a year before my surgery and yes it stopped the hair loss and it started growing back. Then surgery, whoosh more loss. The loss from surgery was a lot of hair but, not just in patches so it was less noticeable. Although my hair dresser would comment every time!

The Levothyroxine stopped the hair loss and got me healthy again. Clumps of hair came out when I shampooed.

I was just Hyper thyriod. It's easily taken care of wiht Levothyroxine. It's the TSH 3 and TSH 4 tests you want to look at. You absolutely need to take care of this, but it's super manageable.

Thanks both of you. I've had those tests before but even tho (one, I forget which) was out of the normal range no doctors were concerned. However, this past Aug. makes 2 years where my hair is thinning in the front. I've tried biotin, iron, etc., to no avail. Then I read maybe it's the thyroid. I just moved so I'll dig out the older test results and compare them with my October 2016 ones and see what's what.

A friend recently had her thyroid tested and found one of her values out of whack. None of her regular doctors seemed concerned and Dr. Google only scared her, :) BUT it was enough for her to FORCE a referral from her PCP to an Endo. Her PCP balked but I reminded her she was the consumer and he worked FOR HER! Turns out, she had a major issue with one side that caused it to be removed after a biopsy.

In other words, BE forceful...get to an endo.

Hair loss from the front is classic thyroid. If you have to print out the recommended ranges with corresponding information for your doctor.

I have one and am seeing her in Dec. (next available appt.) She's my osteo. specialist. When I get my DS bloods next month I'll email her and discuss the issue.
