Question...status updates

Hi! I'm new here. I keep seeing status updates on the left of my screen and I was wondering how people do that and can people comment on them...is there a FAQ posting I can go to to answer silly questions like this??

They are called "alerts". It's to let you know any number of things...like someone likes your post or responded to your post or tagged you. They do NOT send emails to you, but they are there when you visit.

An example will be the alert you get on this thread saying I quoted your post.

To actually get emails, it has to be set up in your preferences and you have to "watch" a post or a forum.
