how long do you lay in bed "trying" to sleep?

and then trying not to try, and then doing progressive muscle relation, then considering getting up but eating carbs, then trying to stop trying to sleep, then worrying that brown stuff in Fritz's ears will need a vet, then considering getting up but having coffee and getting something done, then deciding I'm so tired I can go to sleep any minute if I just stop thinking about it....:090:

I've been up and down all night, I finally just gave up and made some coffee. Perimenopause is my culprit. I take two melatonin, two tylenol pms and if I'm lucky I get a nights sleep, this is not my lucky day. Try a rag with some dilute vinegar to clean Fritz' ear (assuming he's a dog). The brown stuff can be infection but more often than not it's just dirt. Nothing bigger than your finger (assuming Fritz is a smallish dog). If you need qtips, it's vet time, they have really Looooong ear canals.

I meet with a client at 1 this afternoon, I took out rib eyes for dinner. My neck, back and head hurt from lack of sleep. I'll sleep tonight.

Hugs!!!!

Well, I lay in bed...but don't TRY....I'll play boring games on my iPad til I can no longer keep my eyes open then just go to sleep...regardless of whether it's 10 or 2. I've had plenty of nights when it was an all nighter.

I sleep a couple hours and then wake up at 1 or 2 or 3 and can't go back to sleep, even though I'm tired.

Fritz is a dog and I'm going to try the vinegar, thanks.

Sammie probably has to go to the vet tomorrow so I can ask her while I'm there. Sammie is - again - drinking tons of water. he has had this twice before and labs showed nothing. vet said it was maybe the beginning of kidney problems or a tumor on some gland... now I'm thinking I need to look up when he was checked for diabetes, too.

Liz, you are right: trying is the worst thing to do.

at least I don't have to work the next two days.

Okay, I went thru that...turns out a med I was taking to help me sleep was causing the insomnia. It would GET me to sleep, only to have me wide awake about 3 hours later. I found it by googling the side effects of ALL the meds I was on at the time...

Happens to me too, the iPad is both a blessing and a curse in this regard. Reading usually helps me relax enough to fall back to sleep eventually, but playing games or surfing social media often distracts me and keeps me up. This happens to me at least 2ce a night, the second time when I get up to go potty or take the puppy out to go. Hubby knows at this point that if I get sleepy enough to fall asleep on the couch to just let me be because if he wakes me up to go to bed like a normal human I'll be starting from square one. Melatonin helps, sometimes if my mind is racing, I'll need a xanax, but the more I obsess and TRY to fall asleep, the worse it is.

I have to say - I don't care any more since I retired. Not caring helps. (....running...ducking....hiding...) But I occasionally take melatonin - it does work, mostly for getting to sleep, not so much for staying asleep.

isn't that the truth, it's not the insomnia that kills you it's the having to work when you aren't sleeping . I got in one nap before 9 AM and expect another one coming up.

I tried melatonin a long time ago but maybe I should get some more. wonder how it would work if I took in the middle of the night.

Melatonin is supposed to regulate your sleep cycle depending on the day-night transition (light levels?), but I have taken it late at night and it doesn't mess up the next day.
