I have been reading a variety of bariatric message boards, in particular on Facebook, where so-called "experts" are exhorting others to follow ridiculous eating plans that involve extremes of restriction either of the type of foods and/or timing of eating them.

In my semi-professional opinion (and in the view of some surgeons), this is ludicrous at best, harmful at worst, and for some with eating disorders, is swapping one disorder for another. That includes intermittent fasting and the ever-popular (in some loony circles) "food sensitivities" which require you to avoid all sorts of foods that are good for DSers. These are usually either self-prescribed or given the patina of "science" by osteopaths. :eyeroll:

Yeah, you know what I'm talking about.

I have to shake my head when I see one from that crowd.

One of the more recent was someone touting a smoothie type shake she made from mostly veggies and fruit...said she didn't bother counting carbs cause they weren't important to her (food sensitive delicate snowflake). Rather than tell her she was loony, I just figured up based on her recipe, how much protein/fat/carbs...and posted it.

@southernlady : HAH - so did I! What did you come up with?

Calories: 1583
Carbs: 106
Fat: 131
Protein: 23 (NOT 32 like she claimed)
Sodium: 90
Sugar: 32 (Almost exactly what a 12 oz can of Coke has)

I have heard of a lot of people trying the "fast for a couple of days per week" diet. I know that a Nut at the hospital here is giving this the thumbs up. Crap.

26.5 protein/165 fat/108.8 carbs

I didn't break down the sugar in the carbs cause as far as I am concerned carbs = glucose (sugar). And I didn't bother with the calories.

However it is added up, it's a shitload of carbs and almost NO protein. What little protein is there is plant protein.

For DSers?!?!

Not that I know of, I doubt she knows what a DSr is. My DIL works at the hospital and she spoke with the NUT about doing this diet. I think it is a crazy, stupid idea for someone who works 12 hour shifts in the ICU to be fasting two days a week.

There are some people out there who drive me crazy. Everything that happens in their lives is DS related. Hangnails, a bad hair day, car repairs, every single freaking thing. I love the snowflake thing. Perhaps we should name it Snowflaking. And it is a blizzard out there.

The fanatical pursuit of the perfect macro for your ideal IF WOE has gone beyond what is reasonable. However I have seen the pics and IFperson is thin and I'm not. If I thought there was a snowball's chance in Hell it would do anything for me, I'd try it.

Oh, and if you can't stand criticism - or more importantly, if you don't have a rational ANSWER for the criticism - and you therefore have to block the person who questions the value of your proselytizing about your disordered eating rather than having them directly question your craziness, because you not only have an eating disorder but also a compulsive megalomaniacal need to post about your disordered eating, then you MIGHT be an orthorexic.

Fortunately, I have other ways to read this nonsense, and will keep calling it out, through proxies if necessary. Those people are dangerous and unethical.

Granted, I am one that says adjust your level of carbs to your personal tolerance, and one who does see some interesting studies out there on IF.. but doesn't intentionally IF if I am hungry (I'm not a morning eater, never was, never will be.. but there are times when a bowl of Grape Nuts and 1/2 banana hit the spot, black coffee is usually bfast though.)

There IS some interesting info out there on the metabolic effects of IF in normies.. it's not a bad thing IMO, so long as you aren't mentally killing yourself to adhere to it. If you are hungry, physically, EAT what is healthy and necessary for your needs. I find personally, at the very least if I (unintentionally) IF, I never really gain much at all.. and if I actually pay attention to the food I eat and avoid total crap food, I lose without trying, but really slowly.. I've just not been bothering recently. I need to actually try as I'd love to be back to my smaller jeans.

I AM in favor of the "eat when you are hungry" routine though.. as someone who doesn't malabsorb, I frankly, still rarely get actually hungry. If I ever dip to a level of BF that tells me I need to adjust this, I will.. but the only time I got "too skinny" was when I was lifting really heavy and eating under 1800-2000cal day (and I was hungry!) Now I'm holding steady at 20up from my preferred weight but not really watching anything at all, and I sit on my ass all day. I believe the body does have an innate ability to trigger the survival mechanisms needed regardless of surgery type. The times I got really physically hungry, I actually needed the food. At this point I eat more for fun/taste/boredom and overeat my sleeve frankly, and if I cut that out, I'd be down to my jeans again. I do know that I do better on a restricted carb intake, and personally think the majority of MO people likely do as well. Not talking necessarily keto-levels here, but just your average lower-carb stuff. Anyway, yes- I've seen a lot of "orthorexic" posting on some VSG boards, and have called it out.. which is why I'm here and not there so much.

I agree. And they have put themselves in a position where they can do much harm.
