Well it was more than puking. . . I need to know if anyone has experienced this - I went yesterday for a physical assessment with a trainer. I was pretty excited about it. I ate about noon - left the chic fillet about 12:30 - my appointment was at 1. The first 30 mins was a history taking, measurements, weight, goal setting. Then she showed me the cardio equipment and explained how to warm up. The test consisted of things like how may of X I could do in 30 seconds. Standing and sitting in a chair, wall squat, squats etc. My 'last' test was laying on my back and doing abdominal crunches - did 15 in 30 seconds so not excessively fast I don't think.

Well then - bamn - I experienced a vasovagal response - had I not been in the floor I probably would have hit it. I got nauseous and eventually vomitted. Extremely diaphoretic and any movement of my head resulted in an increase of the nausea. This episode lasted a while - like 45 mins to an hour. About 30 minutes in I had to crawl to the bathroom - thought I had messed on myself. Had a loose stool - The trainer 'offered' to call an ambulance but we compromised on calling the wife. She had to drive me home anyway. I had to ride with my eyes closed - did not feel better for hours then felt like I had been through the ringer.

Today it is call the doc day - I had been to the doc just before the training session and he was thrilled for my weight loss and certainly approved the workout process.

I have never experienced anything like this before and do not care to repeat it. I have done crunches before - some years ago when I worked out regularly an abs class was my favorite. This is the first vigrous exercise I have done post - op (8 months)

so, need your thoughts please. I had over 35 oz of water in already for the day + coffee and protein drink. had been about 90 minutes since I had eaten (chicken nuggets). The exercise was not that strenuous - it was like short bursts and we had been doing the test about 45 mins to an hour. Needless to say, I won't get to go to the class tonight. The trainer won't take me back till I see the doc. Can't say I blame her.
 
OMG How scary for you. I don;t know exactly why you experienced what you did but will offer this...

We aren't spring chickens anymore. (I have 5 years on you.) You went from zero to going all out to do as many of X as you could in 30 seconds. (And I bet you were feeling competitive and giving it your all, too.) You need to start slow, even though it won;t feel like you're getting your money's worth for the training session.

Some young trainers push us to do too much too soon. A couple of years ago I hired a hot young trainer who believed in the theory of using a weight you can barely lift to the point of muscle exhaustion, then picking up the next lighter weight and using that to exhaustion. Nice theory but he started too high by having me lift a 40# free weight in each hand in the first minute. I knew I was in trouble but didn't want him to think I was geriatric so I forced myself. (HA I was 50 something; he was 24.) His sexy end of session stretching exercises where he hooked my ankle over his shoulder and leaned towards me in an (unfortunately) clothed porn move did not make up for the destruction of my lower back -- two hours later and I was at the doctor with patches of icy numbness in the bottom of my feet from spinal nerve damage.

Also I started taking prescription Prilosec 40 mg about 2 months before my DS. A week after I started the PPI, I had chili for dinner at 6 then the next morning at 10a, gagged on a big calcium pill and up came all the hamburger from the chili, pristine and undigested. This has happened frequently after the DS, sometimes in the middle of the night when I am sleeping and on a bed wedge, too -- I no longer eat after 8pm. I think by virtually eliminating stomach acid, the PPI drastically slows digestion of dense protein in me. Maybe it does with you too and those nuggets were very much undigested. When the blood was diverted to your muscles vs digestive tract (why we're not supposed to eat and swim), your digestive tract revolted against the nuggets.

I hope you get it sorted out. It's hard enough getting back into the swing of exercise without the exercise taking a swing back at us.
 
There may be exactly nothing wrong with you.

However, it is 9 kinds of wrong to go from sedentary to how many of this, and this, and this, and this can you do in 30 seconds. And any 'professional' trainer should know this.

There is no shortcut to fitness. Being a weekend warrior and subjecting yourself to this kind of treatment can be sabotaging to your efforts. You will get hurt and then you can quit.

Any attempt to become fit has to start where you are today. For some, that's chair exercises. Others can do more.

Where are you today? What kinds of activity have you been doing? Looks to me like you need to do some training to prepare to be ready to do something as strenuous as you attempted yesterday!

Ever heard of cool runnings? It works. I was the biggest slug on the planet and they took me from nothing to being able to run 10 miles. I would suggest you start with something like this. After you can easily walk 30 miles a week, start working on the other things you want to do. By then you will be much more accustomed to activity. And it's free. No gym or 'trainer' required.

Wow, I am so sorry. This is not normal to starting to work out again. Physical exertion should cause you to ache, be short of breath, sweat, etc but puking and getting extremely dizzy and nauseous to the point of losing bowel control is not a normal response to exercise. Please make sure you see a Dr and get checked out. It may very well be nothing but better safe than sorry.
 
thanks guys - @Munchkin - I have heard of coolrunnings in fact - just recently started checking it out. was looking at their couch to 5K app. This was suppose to be a fitness test to see my starting point. The longest I did anything was 2 minutes. My 'perceived' exertion was really low. Just little short bursts

@Clematis - thank you for the kind words. this trainer is about 55 probably so not a youngster .

Thank you Scott - I did talk to the surgeon's office - don't think it was from surgery - referred me back to my PCP. Have an appointment with him next Wednesday. I'll be relegated to increasing my walking till then.
 
Have you had a cold or viral symptoms lately? Any other dizzy spells or vertigo since then? So sorry your effort to get some exercise which I know you've been contemplating for a while wound up putting you in such an unpleasant spot.
 
Hey @DBmom23 - no, nothing odd. occasionally felt like my head was stuffed and if I moved it to fast I would get dizzy. My friend calls that googie... so, occasionally felt googie. All seems good today
 
Morning @DBmom23 - feel great! got the MD doctor appointment on Wednesday - so just hanging out till then.

Do have an interesting development -I had a repeat K done last week - it was low at 5 months and they increased my K. It was at that point I switched from Barilfie Vits to the vitalady schedule and began taking twice Vit K than what the doc recommended. The results came back lower than at 5 months - Now I am concerned everything has dropped so asked them to pull all the labs. The office did not post my Vit K - this was late Friday - just emailed and asked what I was taking as far a supplementation.

So - tomorrow will be the tale... we'll see what they do. Not sure low vits could cause the vasovagal response but hell who knows. If Boyce wont pull all the labs, going to ask my pcp to Wednesday.

My Vitamin K is just barely in range and even taking 4,000 mg a day of K1 it isn't coming up. I think maybe I need the K2, but honestly I am not certain how important it is to get the K up substantially if it is in range. We know that D needs to be high end of range, but I don't know about K.

I am waiting on my E and B6 to come back as my E was out of range last draw. The B6 since I switched to the Costco Cal Citrate with that magnesium and Copper in it, well I am having it checked because somebody said that it went dangerously high on them from taking the Costco CC.

My copper did come up a touch but still out of range and my zinc dropped to out of range.
 
I experienced something very similar the first several times I worked out with my PT, only he really wasn't asking for anything really stupid. Turns out, it was food. I was not eating enough calories to sustain that kind of activity. Especially carbs, the quick energy food source. When I was only taking leisurely mile or two walks, it didn't show up, but I've had to learn to eat like an athlete to do athletic things.

The other day I walked into the gym and he asked me what I had for breakfast. I told him half of one of these: http://www.jackinthebox.com/food/breakfast/supreme-croissant. I could feel everybody in the gym brace for a full blown Trainer-Hissy-Fit but he was like "Oh, good choice." The first few months he would end the session with me doing exercises on the floor so that if I did pass out I wouldn't hurt myself. And I tried all kinds of different foods and then saw how long I lasted.

Good things are just about any breakfast sandwich with meat and eggs and cheese. Oatmeal with blueberries and nuts is OK, not as good though. Half a bagel with lox is the best, but I got sick of them after a while. Yogurt smoothies with fruit and kale were OK, but I would typically fade in the middle.

One morning I slept late and tried going in with just a protein shake and it was the worst. I had to excuse myself twice to go to the bathroom and thought I would vomit the whole time. I was weaker than a kitten.

If you think about it, although our daily calories look impressive by the time you factor in malabsorption they really are not. We may feel like we are on a high fat diet, but if you asked our bodies they would complain about being on a very, very low fat diet because they don't get to digest much of the fat.

I agree that you should go to your doctor, but hopefully it will be something as easy to fix as the above! Good luck!
 
One more thing came to me...

I don't think I could have done the whole personal trainer thing at 8 months. It wasn't easy at all at 15 months. But I think trying it during the honeymoon phase when losing weight is the highest priority would have been impossible.

I know other people do it. I see people posting about returning to the gym at 4 months, but I know I could not have done that.

We all heal at a different pace. Be kind to yourself and remember that it will all come with time...
 
@Brandy - love the green hair! and thank you for the info - I have wondered if it was nutrition for that day - was really stressed about work (talking layoffs - boss asked who on my team I might forfeit) and did not finish by bacon with melted cheese breakfast - then off to the doc and some chicken tenders for lunch then the test. Did have a protein drink in the early am too - but if I am working I usually have a snack about 10 or 10:30 - you know second breakfast.
will see what Ole doc Showalter has to say then try it again.

@DSRIGGS - I remember reading about your K being low but it did not click that you are taking 4 times what I am until this post. Do you take it in divided doses or all at once - just curious? The one I take is Vit K 1, 2 and 3 from Superior Source - it is in our store. and is 1000mcg - they wanted me to take a total of 400 a day so hell, I am taking more than they want. Will be interesting tomorrow to see if I have to face the 'not taking Barilife' music.
