Anyone try this? I couldn't find locally the black bean pasta, and it had mixed reviews, but I instead found Edamame Spaghetti at Costco, and just due to the stats, decided to give it a try.

Details:

The only ingredients are organic edamame and water.

Per serving;

24g protein
11g fiber
21g carbs

Organic,
non-gmo,
gluten free
vegan
kosher

The only big drawback I see by looking at the box is that it says it's a product of China. I'm not a fan of anything out of China, except mb pandas.

So has anyone tried this? I don't expect it to have the same taste and feel of regular pasta, which is just fine, but I'm hoping for something better than those fishy, slimy rubbery shiritake noodles.

I plan to cook some of these tomorrow with browned butter and herbs, to get an idea of how they taste before I bury them in meatsauce.

I'm of the opinion if I want spaghetti, I eat it but then I think I have had it 3 times since surgery almost 5 years ago. Just not worth it.

When I developed diabetes, I tried some of the alternatives...just didn't fly with me. So I just adjusted my insulin dose and ate the real thing. Now, I have maybe a forkful and can power a third world country with the result.

Yeah, like Liz I typically don't do the impostor foods like pasta. That an I really am not much of a fan of edamame flavor, and I just have such a hard time pronouncing that word for some reason. LOL I get tongue tied.

I eat spaghetti with no problem. Now I load it up with a bunch of meat sauce and I even take a fork of peanut butter and eat it with the spaghetti and pasta. I don't eat a ton of pasta but if I do have it I like the flavor of the wheat pasta. White pasta and even rice is just not that flavorful to me and tastes doughy.

Anyway, try the stuff and let us know if you like it. I am not opposed to trying and it sounds like a good source of protein.

Haven't tried it either. I like the black bean pasta in settings where black beans would taste good, like gingery spicy type seasonings or Tex-Mex seasonings. I was not thrilled with them in meat sauce, but they were good with an all meat chili.

That actually sounds good...

I haven't seen either of these, but would prob try them at least once... esp like EN said- the black bean sounds like it could be great in a mexi-inspired cheesy dish. I have had pork skin noodles, which surprisingly, under a heavy tomato meat sauce are damn good, and filling. I love a good pasta, and will have a bit from time to time. Once in a blue moon, a meal of baked ziti is a needed thing. :) I would love to find something that tastes and has the texture of the real thing without the carb load.

There's another I haven't tried, these guys:

The results are in, and we are pleasantly surprised!

Mind you, I eat regular pasta without much consequence, but really, noodles are just a vehicle to get meat / afredo or cheese sauce into my mouth, and I'm always aware that's its carb laden, without much else without that meat sauce. Finally, a noodle that I like that is guilt free.

I cooked them like an idiot, by adding a few more to the boiling water every few minutes when I kept deciding to make a few more. And a few more. Despite that, they all were al dente, and not some over and some under cooked, like I tried so hard to accomplish.

They were chewy enough, and not slippery or slimy, and I (and hubby!!) liked the flavor. They do not taste like wheat pasta, and I actually prefer them to wheat pasta (except fresh, home made, and that's different altogether). I do like edamame beans, and other odd pastas like buckwheat, so if you are a semolina pasta purist, these may not jive with you.

I only put butter, parmesan cheese and some crumbles of roquefort on these. The do absorb. Next time I'm trying olive oil, herbs and tons of garlic.

Hubby, while not having designer guts, does have issues with some foods, so if either of us has issues digesting these, I'll report back with that too.

I haven't tried them, I would if I could find them. Is it just a soy flour pasta nicely dressed by being called edamame? Soy flour can be a little strong tasting even though I love edamame.

Looks like its just 'green soybeans' and water. They have it on Amazon (quite pricey): http://www.amazon.com/Organic-Edamame-Spaghetti-lbs-907g/dp/B00TCUM7X2. Sounds interesting but I've not tried it - I'm only 2 1/2 months out so I wouldn't dare! Maybe next year...

Thanks for posting that link. A friend had recommended them because she likes them a lot but she couldn't remember much except that the box was black. This is the one! I just took a look and was amused that they have right on the box "only 21g carbs!" - shoot, that's almost an entire day's worth for me but then it DOES have a lot of protein and I suppose it wouldn't hurt once in a while.

I looked at the link, thanks for providing it by the way, that is really expensive. Twice what you would pay for it if you could shop at Costco. Of course, we don't have a Costco here, damnit!

Julia got back before I did, but yah, just edamame beans, and not necessarily "soy" tasting.

They are a almost $9 for 2 lbs at Costco. Totally worth it to me.
