We GREW it. Right here in this bizarre plot of land in the suburbs of L.A...that I don’t understand.

So far, the ducks only visit, because we chase them away. There are lizards and squirrels and FLOCKS of SCREECHING parrots. Hungry coyotes roam the streets. Skunks visit, so do opossums. We‘re a little too low down the foothills for the bear visits, thankfully. The little rosemary bush had to be butchered back to a workable size…down to four feet tall and just as wide. Other plants are in planters, not the ground, but the onion that was going south is now an onion “plant,” the cucumber plant and the zucchini grow so fast it’s hard to keep up, and even the cherry tomatoes seem to be surviving. The mourning dove babies were slaughtered by the emaciated feral cat, but all kinds of interesting-looking birds seem to like it here. Beautiful, colorful birds…from little hummingbirds up to an occasional hawk.

After we finish with the final 26 episodes of the original Gilmore Girls and watch the Year in the Life miniseries, I may go outside and see what else is there, in this NON-rural neighborhood.

One smart solution is out there. My grandparents and parents both gardened. The grandchildren were drafted into labor at potato harvesting*. There were prizes for the kid who found the biggest, the smallest, and the most interestingly shaped potato. I won one year with a potato shaped like a duck. My prize? Bragging rights. Good memories!

* We also planted them. Planting was easy. Just walk the row and drop the potato "seed". We used our feet as the measure. Harvesting was on our hands and knees busting the dirt off the potatoes. It was not a commercial effort, just for the family. The farm was sold and there is now a church on the potato field. I refuse to drive by it when I'm visiting family in Ohio. Silly I know. Too many memories have been shattered by time. Imma gonna keep this one.

I think this is lovely.
do you have a bird bath? you need one of those cameras that record when there is motion and I'm sure all kinds of animals would show up.

I love the desert and wish I could spend every winter there.
