Who here i$ $mart with money?

and how effing nuts am I? I want to move into that nucking futts expensive area, and I am pretty sure to come close to replacing our home in central, IL. Our place here sits on a half acre, is 3,000 square feet, huge trees and nicely landscaped, 3 car garage and if we finished our basement it would be close to 4,500 of living space......we bought for $230K in 2011 and it is in a great school district. I am sure that would be north of $1MM in a good LA neighborhood like Pasadena. That being said we will downsize if we relocate anywhere as the boys are going to be 22 and 20 soon so they will be on their own soon enough.

and yes I know the Bay area is even more expensive.

FML I hate living in the cold anymore and want to move to Cali but I have't made any inroads into finding a job in that region and I just don't have a strong recruiter that specializes in my field in that area.

I was born in Pasadena, so I have a clue here. Pasadena is not a good neighborhood. It is several neighborhoods, some fantastic, some scarey as hell.

Here's a recent sale in the price range you mentioned. Please note that it closed for about $50k over the original asking price.

And feel free to check out the area at http://www.crimemapping.com/map.aspx to determine if you need to sleep on the floor.

Yeah I hear you on. Pasadena. I was in both kinds of neighborhoods when out. That comfort inn area looked dicey and we got out.

We ended up going over to Burbank and a brand new Springhill Suites (wow did they Upgrade that chain - basically Hyatt place equivalent) in a nice Business District area with several other new hotels and downtown area type mall just a few blocks up.

Montrose and LA Canada Flintridge by Verdugo Hills Hospital seemed like a nice area...at least the little downtown areas.

You have good taste. I think the cheapest houses in La Cañada are well over a half-million and they are "fixer uppers" in horrid condition.
