But I didn't really say why. Most of you don't really know that my dh is medically disabled from his last job. They medically retired him, he did not ask for retirement.

In March we had to go for his yearly visit with his doc who handles his disability. This year they got squirrley and made it a real hassle after accepting everything as it was for 6 years.

Anyway, this is MY half of the conversation I had with Diana about 2 months ago.

A bit of background, in 2004, he slipped and fell hitting his elbow and head. Prior to that he had NO issues. That was April...in late 2004, he suffered a stroke only no one admitted that's what it was. He had an MRI as part of that. He went thru a battery of memory tests.

Our neurologist admitted later in 2006 that he wasn't thinking outside the box with Charles because of his age (he's 55 now).

By late 2005, he was having major memory issues, dealing with other problems and it just wasn't the man I married. I became the squeaky wheel. We visited neuro's, went over to the Cleveland Clinic neuro dept, and nothing. He was getting worse with his memory. We found a neuro in Toledo (lived on the MI side of Toledo metro at the time) who just HAPPENED to do another MRI and the doctor who read it did not see Charles or know his birthday. THAT was when we discovered he had Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus which is "only suppose to occur in the elderly".

In 2006 he was fitted with a ventricular shunt. His mood improved and his memory got some better.

2007 he found a job with GE. And bumped up his long term disability from the standard 50% to an offered 70%. Of course he paid the extra.

By late 2008 it was becoming obvious that his memory was not up to what it should be as a Nuclear Engineer designing the next generation Nuclear power plants. His supervisors were having to "babysit" him. As part of this, we saw a neurophysiologist. He went thru another major battery of tests. His cognitive abilities and memory HAD gotten worse. That doctor and GE decided he could no longer work in the Nuclear Engineering field. GE decided he was to be retired. Charles and I were more than willing to relocate and him take a different job at GE which was not in their Nuclear division. But they retired him in Feb 2009.

In fall 2010, SSA agreed and awarded him SSDI.

We have had NO problems til this year getting the paperwork submitted saying "yes he is still disabled".

Anyway, that is why he ended up on LTD/SSDI.

The neurophysiologist was in Wilmington, NC where we lived from 2007-2009.

A couple of things he did this year differently AFTER we got hassled was 1) ask for a referral to a neurosurgeon here locally for followup if needed and 2) a referral back to the doc in Wilmington, NC.

Charles goes thru a new battery of tests late this month. I will stay home that time since he will be testing most of the time he is there. But his follow up in late August, I will go.

What is most likely to happen is we get to continue as we are now...retired/on LTD & SSDI.

What COULD happen is his memory has improved enough for him to be re-employed. If that is the case, GE has to reinstate him since they retired him. AT his old salary and with full benefits. It's possible we could end up moving...where, who knows, but it is also possible that he could be assigned to one of the two area GE facilities. We have one 40 mins southwest of us and another 45 mins north of us. Neither are in his old field of Nuclear Engineering but BOTH are engineering facilities and he is a Mechanical Engineer by degree, Bachelor's and Master's. Or we could end up back in Wilmington.

So keep us in your thoughts please. I honestly don't know which way would be best. I do know that I like where we are and how we live. We aren't hurting in the financial arena now...we were for a long time. BUT I also know that it would not hurt my feelings to go back to our old salary level AND have GE health benefits, retirement, etc.

I think good things are coming your way Liz! I know change is hard...and I know it's even harder when you guys have been through all that you have. But I see this as a very positive development. Maybe he'll go back to work for a few yrs...and work towards an early retirement? Maybe he'll love the new gig and work for 15 more yrs! Or maybe he'll just stay on SSDI. It's all going to be great however it turns out. But I just know that if his health could permit him to return to work again, he'd feel a whole lot better about himself and your finances would no doubt improve dramatically. So that's me final vote! Though again I repeat...all the possibilities are good ones and you guys will be happy regardless of the hand your dealt I'm sure.

Okay, so he leaves in the morning. Testing is Wed afternoon and Thursday morning and he heads back home afterward. And then we wait.

He is REALLY wanting to go back to work so please, swing chickens, cross your toes, pray, whatever!

I did not know this Liz and I am sorry to here what you all have been through. That being said it sounds like your husband has done well.

Hopefully your husband gets his wish and you are both happy with the outcome.

Positive thought sent your way!

Toes are officially crossed lady! And my prayer is for him to be able to work again in the perfect position that he will really enjoy.
