Sunday Weigh In (10/8/2017)

Been away for a bit and missed my 5 year Surgiversary on 9/27! While I am out living life, I will always be connected and indebted to my DS family where I have had the critical support I needed throughout my journey.

At over 5 years out, I seem to easily maintain my weight. I focus on 100 gr of protein per day, try to get in 60-100gr of fat (otherwise hair and skin dry out quickly). I am pretty impressed with the quantity I can eat. A bacon cheeseburger and half a serving of fries on a 'big tummy' day is not unusual. I don't really count carbs anymore, but do try to save them for the end of the day when I can face the 'consequences' in the privacy of my bedroom!

After my hip replacement fiasco last year, I went to science camp again with my students and wasn't sure about attempting my goal of climbing the 'nose' on the climbing wall. I decided I needed to try my best as I would not have another chance.

Just couldn't get my leg up, so I failed. I do feel good that I gave it my all, though. Not bad for a 65 year old, formally MO granny. I would have regretted not trying so it's all good!

Looking to retire after this school year. I am so grateful for my DS and the good health and mobility it has allowed me. Also so grateful for each of you! I will continue to check in!
Have a great week!

wow, good for you even climbing to the nose. and congratulations on your coming retirement.

I'm up a bit this week and I just doubled my blood pressure medication to bring that down to normal. I'll be seeing my doctor this week so I'll be updating him. life is hard and then you get a pill. could be worse.

You so did not "fail"--I am so impressed by your story and progress. You said something above that really resonates with this recent post-op (6/19/17 surgery), that you're "out living life" and that is the greatest success, honestly. Just four months ago the prospect of doing anything athletic again seemed so out of the realm of what is possible that I never imagined doing something as awesome as staring up the gullet of a climbing tower and thinking "Hell, yes, I'll try that." Your progress is so inspirational--thank you for sharing your enormous success :)

LW 66.4 kg (146.4 lbs)
TW 64.1 kg (141.3 lbs)

No idea why, but a happy result this week!
Very good!

You did not fail. Failing would have been either not giving it everything you had or not even trying.
Enjoy this year...

Focus on eating better. That will help. Make sure you tell your PCP about all your issues, please. I worry about you.
LW: 236
TW: 234 (and that is while suffering bloat from my period, so I am shocked!)

I have one more pound to lose till I am down 65 pounds from my high weight. I can't believe this at a less than four months post-op. Is this even real life?!!!
Hard to wrap your head around it, isn't it. After all the diets I've tried and failed, finally something worked. You are doing great.

You are awesome Pam.

Maybe. But you are still at a good weight. How are you feeling?
Yeah I am happy at 190'sh to be honest. Thanks for asking.

I am feeling ready for surgery to clean up adhesions and scar tissue, as well as a likely sigmoidectomy. I have a lot of gut pain and have for the last 6 months. I am tentatively scheduled for surgery on 11/3 at Huntington Memorial in Pasadena. Dr K will likely decide when inside if my sigmoid colon comes out but we know that I have a redundant colon and one documented instance of volvulus (twisting) so personally as a non clinician, it sure seems like it needs to come out to me. My thought, maybe to simple, but if say have I have 5 feet of colon and 4 feet is "normal", then get rid of that extra foot of colon and any "slack" so there isn't anything left to twist.

It is likely in that volvulus condition again so I am going to talk to Dr K and let him know that if there is any significant risk of recurrence that I need to fully understand potential downsides, but that to me it makes sense to remove the sigmoid section of colon to prevent future issue. As you can imagine, I want this to be my last gut surgery.

Most days I have good strength so if we can just get this gut adhesions and volvulus nonsense cleaned up I will be ready to hit life full on again. Living in this current pain (gut and lower back really hurt a lot and it is directly related to pooping issues - when I clean out well the pain pretty much goes away for the most part or is it least very tolerable) and feeling like garbage most of the last four years has become really old.

The lost weight this week was definitely mainly poop. I had a couple good clean out days and lost a lot weight accordingly. The bad part is that I fill right back up, or should I say things get trapped at where the adhesion, scar tissue or twisted colon is at. Some stuff passes around but some stays, is what I believe happens.

Anyway we are in approval process and then I will book travel and get this freaking done. Then I need to get back to work. Yeah I still haven't won that big lotto yet so I can retire. I am trying, but as a professor in grad school told me, smart people don't play the lotto or gamble in casinos...somebody has to win though, right? So a dollar here and there isn't killing me..

So that's my situation.

thanks - I got a PM from SB regarding this - I am actually better than I was for awhile.

I have been sharing everything with my PCP, in fact I apologized for being such a nutbag.

Scott, I really hope the surgery is your last.

Thank you Jackie. Hopefully you can get some answers on your BP and things settle down for you.
